Hmmm...how to respond. Anyone that has watched Trainspotting and thinks that a night out in Edinburgh is anything like that is going to be sorely let down, it just ain't that fun . Yes there is a drug problem in Scotland, but it's no worse than the drug problems in Manchester, Liverpool, Brum, London etc etc.
One of your examples of why you no longer like the film is that of Begbie glassing the guy in the pub and standing around crowing about it. You say that in reality he'd have gotten done for GBH, I say you're wrong. Going out in Scotland is nothing like the way Trainspotting portrays it *but* it is different than going out in England, and I should know as I have vast experience of both. I have only ever come close to one fight in England, and that was with a drunken, loudmouth scouser who threatened a mate. In Scotland I've seen hundreds of fights and participated in a fair few as well. Fights at the end of the night are a common thing in Scotland, but most of the time nothing gets done about it. You choose to fight in Scotland and you either win or lose and thats it. It's slightly different if you're jumped/attacked. If you're badly injured and tell the cops thats fine because only a coward would jump somebody. If you don't tell the cops it's usually because you & some mates are going to "sort out the situation".
Going back to telling the cops, you then have the trouble that the majority of people who will glass someone in the face aren't exactly the sanest members of our society. They're not going to hang around while the police take statements and get all the information they need for a conviction, they're going to badger & threaten anyone that they need to so that the police can't get the information they need, again something that I've got experience of. If they had wanted they could have added some scenes of Begbie saying the immortal words "Any o yous ***ts tell the bizzies aboot this and I'll be stickin a gless in yir face anaw"
To get slightly back on track, Trainspotting doesn't say it's a true story or based on fact *but* it isn't really all that far away from the actual reality of Scotland.
And this is way to long a post so I'll just say Trainspotting is brilliant and it's not "****e bein Scottish"
