Saw this this evening and i enjoyed it. I've read some reviews that say it's awful and it's put people off going to see it. My opinion is, don't listen to them, go see it and make up your own mind
Warning, some spoilers if you haven't seen the movie yet
The CGI on the whole is pretty good, not LOTR perfection but they suit the purpose of the film. Hugh played the role extremely well, it won't win him any awards but he was a very competent action hero with the script that he had. Kate Beckinsale was okay.. that corset looked a little uncomfortable i thought and i want hair like hers that can curl perfectly after being completely soaked twice in the rain.. okay, being cynical. I agree that Richard Roxburgh played it completely over the top but it was the only way to play it i thought. The demon that he turned into was pretty cool i thought. I liked the Wolfman too, the way he ripped off his skin was mildly yukky but effective. And did you see the in-joke? (please let it have been an injoke...) when Van Helsing-the-Wolfman morphed into the hairy beastie, held out one hand and claws popped out and he scraped them on the wall... i almost spat out my coke in surprise and laughter...
David Wenham was okay as Carl, Van Helsing's side-kick, kind of sweet too.
The ending... the very ending was cheesy to say the least but set it up nicely for the sequel that Hugh Jackman is contracted to do.
If you're going to see this to see a LOTR type work of art, you're going to be disappointed, but if you're going to be entertained in a leave your brain at the door kind of way, you won't be disappointed.
I'd give it a six out of ten
