Nicolai grimaced as he sniffed air. The foul stench of death permeated the air and wrapped itself around Nicolai, causing him to feel smothered by it. He had been around death since he began his training at the age of 16 and the thing he hated about it most was the smell.
?What happened here?? he asked as he moved through the room, carefully avoiding the dead carcasses.
?Looks like this gang of kids stumbled on a nest. We?ve been tracking these bastard vamps for the better part of a year and this isn?t the worst we?ve seen them do,? replied the Watcher as he took down some notes on a plastic clipboard. The bright red clipboard contrasted well against the congealed blood, Nicolai noted.
Stepping over a dismembered leg and moving into the next room, Nicolai took a minute to look out of the window. The view was quite brilliant. A beautifully kept public park guarded by a fence of trees and penetrated by a flowing river. Joggers ran around the concrete path with their personal stereos playing up-beat music and retired couples walked their dogs while walking hand-in-hand. Turning around again and looking into the room he had come from, Nicolai looked at the bodies on the floor, mangled and covered in blood. What kind of God allows such contrasts? He thought to himself.
?The same God that allows his followers to be ripped to pieces by the creatures of hell,? he said to himself under his breath.

?No! Don?t hurt my wife and children, p-please,? pleaded the Priest as he fell to his knees in front of the demonic creature.
?Where is your precious God now, little man?? said a tall, muscular vampire. He was obviously the leader.
?He?s obviously an absentee God, so in his absence I?ll make some life and death decisions for him. First, I think your wife should die. But before she dies, she shall be raped and tortured,? said the vampire as he motioned to one of his followers, who smiled and quickly dragged the woman off into a side room.
?Second, two of your three offspring shall die. They shall die quickly, to contrast the way your wife shall die. Hmm, I think they should die now, in front of your eyes, Victor? Do it now,? he said as he nodded to another vampire, who followed orders by wrenching back on the head of one boy, resulting in a loud snap as his neck broke. The young girl, he picked up and took her neck in his mouth, draining her blood from her body.
?Your third and youngest child shall live, so that your family line may continue and you may have some hop?chance, of vengeance. He shall be freed immediately,? he said, nodding to yet another of his followers who let go of the young boy, clearly distraught and horrified at the display.
?Run Nicolai! Run to you?re Uncle and tell him what has happened here! Go, now!? shouted the Priest, struggled to get free from the vampire?s grip only to be put down again by a slap across the face.
?And you?you are the leader of Christ?s Church and for this you will suffer Christ?s death??

Nicolai turned, startled from his thoughts as Freddie, his long time friend and training partner tapped him on the shoulder.
?Come on Nic, we have to report to the senior watcher here, his name is Giles, Rupert Giles,?
?Okay, I?m coming. Sorry, I just got lost in my thoughts,?
?Happens to us all at times like these but you are the best and that?s why you are here. They also think they know the vampire who is leading this nest is. Rupert will tell us,? replied Freddie, patting Nicolai on the back as they walked into a dinning room.
The man at the table was just cleaning his glasses as they entered and looked as he put them back on. Standing up he offered his hand to them each in turn.
?Hello gentleman. Nicolai and Frederick I presume?? said the man in a very definite English accent.
?I?m Rupert Giles, I?ll be assisting you in hunting down, and removing the vampires responsible for this?tragedy,? he said, after searching for the right word.
?Aren?t you currently assigned to the Slayer?? said Nicolai.
?Err, yes, but she?s very competent at her job and so the council has sent me up here for a few days. They think it will help her be more independent?I think if she gets any more independent she won?t need a watcher,? said Giles, with a slight twinge of resentment in his voice.
?Freddie said you knew who the vampire that did this was??
?Yes that?s correct. He left a mark on the floor by the bodies, it was covered by the blood until we started cleaning,?
?The vampire?s name is Smith, ?Black? Smith,? said Giles in a rather sullen tone.
The shock hit Nicolai like a brick being slammed into his face and for a few moments he could do nothing but stand there. When he started to regain his composure he took a pen from his jacket pocket and moved over to the wall, drawing an archaic symbol onto it.
?That?s the symbol you found?? he said.
?Yes, how did you know that was it? Did you see it on your way through??
?That?s the symbol that was carved into my Father?s crucifix??
?Oh God, Nicolai?? was all Freddie could say.
