I was a little dissappointed by this movie But admittedly I came to it with perhaps too high expectations and in truth I did think it was quite a good film. This post may well contain a few mild SPOILERS!!!
The story was a standard cyberpunkish affair that required very little thought imho, perhaps due to my overfamiliarity with the genre, and I found few surprises along the way. I knew it was based on one of Philip K. Dick's works going in there though. Some of the action though seemed to be a little restained and lacked the urgency that the nature of the film required
I was however very impressed with the "world-building" that had gone on to great the backdrop of the film, the advertising, the distinct socio-economic seperation and the gadgety tech-stuff, all of which are standard cyberpunk fair, but were particularly well done in this case
I normally find Tom Cruise at least watchable and I actually liked him in this film and thought he made at least a semi-convincing Captain Anderton. Max Von Sydow seemed to be almost reprising his role from the "Judge Dredd" movie though, with the spoilerish twist aside, but he does it so well, he's the obvious choice for the role.
I just wonder if there's going to be a different version in a few years time without the narrative at the end, and a sad ending in place of the happy ever after one shown this time round... Somehow with Spielberg at the helm, I think not
