The obvious answer is Star Trek, and while that series has had some real howlers (I and V, particularly), certainly nothing worse than View to a Kill.
The reason both of these manages is - I suspect - that the basic premise allows for great variety, whereas your horror/slasher franchise tends to be more and more of the same, and often even dilutes the villain into a wise-cracking pantomime character. With Star Trek and Bond, you cna just keep changing your central elements:
- Okay. This film has an angry Klingon captain who doesn't trust the Federation.
- Okay, this one is about an ex-Soviet General who wants to restore the Russian Empire.
- This one will have a frozen ex-Soviet General team up with a Romulan to try and turn all the citizens of the Federation into wombles!
Add a few action sequences - again, leaving you even more variation than the 'what household items will the killer use this week' routine - a romance and maybe some nifty gadgets, and you're away with a fresh new number.
That or you're stuck with another dead-end odd-numbered Star Trek, or a late-in-the-day Roger Moore stinker.
