I don't know the comics, but from your descripotion I think they should wheel out Christopher Walken again
Keanu Reeves new film
Keanu Reeves has a new film which he will start filming in september. The film is called Constantine and is based on the Hellblazer comics.
Anyone who is a comic fan will know that this film has been in developement for ages with the official title either being John Constantine: Hellblazer or just Constantine I think they're calling it this so dumb americans don't get confused with the hellraiser films.
I've also just found out who is due to play John Constantine none other than Keanu Reeves of matrix fame now I've got a major problem with this casting and this is the reason why John Constantine is a mystic who scares the living crap out of every single member of the DC comics universe (yes even Superman and Batman).
Sorry but I can't see Keanu Reeves being able to scare people, also he plays head games with everybody he comes across again can't see Reeves pulling this off somehow and the final reason I think it's a mistake having him as the lead is this John Constantine smokes loads and drinks a lot can't see Keanu doing this somehow.
If I go and see this film I'm going to have to ignore everthing I know about the character otherwise I'm going to be greatly disappointed.

as much as i adore Keanu , from how youve described Constantine he wouldnt be right.
now Colin Farrell would be perfect!!

Well I don't know why Keanu can't do scary, I've seen him in some inconsequential film where he had a beard and was quite conviningly mean.
The drink will be apple juice or similar, hell even Dean Martin drank a lot of apple juice when it should have been whiskey, as for the smoking, I don't know whether Keanu does "in real life" or not, but I dare say he could do it for a role if he felt like it?
I was very surprised by Hugh Jackman as Wolvering so I'd give this a chance before writing it off completely

"The Gift" or "The Watcher" perhaps?

Keanu Reeves was excellent as the creepy psycho in The Watcher. I was expecting it to be a really average thing without much to it, but i was very impressed especially with Reeves who tends to get knocked down a bit more than he deserves i think.
Ah but Constantine is not a creepy psycho so that kinda nixs that idea. And he's not a fighter so He can't use all the moves he learnt for the matrix. I would recommend that anyone picks up a copy of the hellblazer comics sop thgat you can know what I'm talking about and why it's wrong on so many levels.

And here's the final reason why it's a mistake having reeves as constantine.....John Constantine is guess what he's ENGLISH and anybody who saw Dracula know that Keanu can't do an English accent even if you tortured him.

Keanu can do evil but not a hard english b*****d!
I actually thought that was quite a good film !!! I certainly enjoyed it, not quite sure WHAT the dolphin did exactly, but I thought it was all most enjoyable

Jonny Mnemonic was pretty scary...
While they may well have the drinking, I wouldn't be surprised if the movie version of John Constantine didn't smoke.
pimpdaddy; please give us time to get our earplugs in place before you react to that idea.
Heck; it's a comic book movie so it must be for kids, so I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't swear either.

i liked Johnny Neumonic the second time i watched it,maybe cos of Keanu but also cos of Dina Meyer! and the dolphin's brainwas supposed to be directly interfaced with a computer so his brainwaves could access the data stored in Johnnys brain...or something like that. like the put electrodes in animals brains now to read their reactions in hideous experiements and use dolphins as targetting devices in the navy..just one step ahead

How can he not smoke that's one of the things about the character. He better swear then again they have the same problem with the preacher film(see James marsden new film post) Also according to a mate of mine they've only gone and given him a car what are they trying to do make him the new batman *goes off ranting*

Well, that's not in and of itself a bad thing. I'm not sure John Constantine having wheels is a negative step, especially in the States where it's not practical to walk most places.

Unless they've given him the Constantine-mobile of course.
Well cosidering the character hardly ever uses a car most of the time he just turns up. The only thing that I can hope for is that it is just a car which means no gadgets (like the batmobile)

Their investigation takes them through the world of demons and angels that exists just beneath the landscape of contemporary Los Angeles.

Do you really want to be one of those people who (for example) diss the Hulk movie for not being true to the comics before the darn thing is even on release?
Wait and see what happens.
If the movie sucks, then you don't have to watch it and you are no worse off than if there had never been a movie.
I am going to wait for the film, but at the moment lets just say I'm not filled with confidence. And I didn't diss the hulk movie but I have seen it and I can sum it up in one word "BAD" and I only say that as a comic fan.

That's interesting. I have been checking the reviews today and they are almost all positive whilst several do say that it will appeal to Ang Lee fans more than comic fans.

I know which camp I'd rather be in.
