None of these were even remotely close.

Chasing Amy took a beating from Travolta and Co, Spacey in the shower was all but obliterated by the Death Star whilst Memento came out tops in the battle of the fractured time lines.

Spacey lives to fight another day after LA Confidential comfortably saw off Grease.

Fight Club beat a po-faced, sentimental prison drama to a bloody pulp, and so did Keyser Soze.

Vertigo lost out to the Python gang and finally, ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ suffered ‘Death by Stereo’ as the last (partly) black and white movie was eliminated.

No, having to watch Lars Von Trier's The Idiots and Lindsay Anderson's This Sporting Life is torture enough, not once, but 2 and a half times (each, I might add) and having to answer exam questions!

Why do Film Courses do that? I think they are scared people might equate enjoying the movies with a poor course.

In my day, it was Last Year at Marienbad and anything starring Lillian Gish! Then again that was compensated for by The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Annie Hall.

Why shouldn't film courses do that? You think students doing any other subject get to study only stuff they like?

The point, surely, is not whether you enjoy a film, but whether it is worth studying. I haven't seen The Idiots (I find von Trier to be somewhat overrated, although his new film looks.. interesting), but This Sporting Life is a great film. I'm sure both of them meet that criteria.

I was kind of joking.

I'm sure there are key ideas to be illustrated by those movies (I'd guess some kind of argument about realism in cinema) and actually, I quite like Last Year at Marienbad although Ms. Gish does leave me cold.

One key difference with (say) English Literature is that the concept of authorship is pretty limited in Film Studies and so you are usually studying concepts rather than artistic qualities. That being the case, there are typically many different movies which can all be used to illustrate a concept whereas studying Shakespeare's use of language requires you to read some Shakespeare.

In any case, being required to watch anything several times can be a real chore however (one of my courses was called Study of a single film and involved writing a dissertation on a movie chosen for you... many sighs of relief were heard when it was announced our movie was to be Edward Scissorhands).

I could happily study the film 'Go'. First watch decided it was an average/poor film (which to be fair, it probably is), but for some bizarre reason I watched it a few times more (boredom i suppose), and found each time something new to like about it. I've watched it countless times now, and it just keeps getting better.
