Having seen the trailer, i think this is best approached as a project where they took the name of the stories and dropped everything else to do with Asimov's work. The trailer looks like a generic scifi film with Will Smith. I like James Cromwell, but i'm not sure this will be very interesting.
I, Robot
Writer: Akiva Goldsman (based on the book by Isaac Asimov)
Director: Alex Proyas
Starring: Will Smith, Bridget Moynahan, James Cromwell
Rated: TBA
Trailer: http://www.apple.com/trailers/fox/i_robot
Release Date: August 2004
Tagline: What will you do with yours?
Plot Synopsis:
In 2035, technophobe detective Del Spooner (Will Smith) is called in to investigate a murder supposedly committed by a robot, which according to the Laws of Robotics, is impossible. Is the robot to blame, or is there a larger threat at hand?
This one looks pretty interesting but I've heard quite a few people have a few reservations about it because of the huge differences between the film and the book it's based on. But then, I wouldn't know because I've not read it.
All I know is (anyone who's read the book, please feel free to add or correct anything ) the book was a collection of short stories while the film takes the story from a seperate Asimov book altogether. Also, the producers seem to have taken a significant action-based angle on the proceedings which might disappoint a few people.
But from what very little I know about Asimov, a verbatim adaptation might not be that great a success (Bicentennial Man, anyone?) and besides, as action sci-fi goes, it looks pretty good.

Pilfered my format did ya?
I, Robot does indeed look like a fairly generic sci-fi action film that is cashing in on the name of a prominent science fiction writer and his work. Which is cool.
It's not as cool as if we got an artistic, well scripted, well acted science fiction masterpiece, but a couple of hours of fun action with a wise cracker like Will Smith is fun. And using the name will get lots of people to buy and read the original book, which is great.

After some research I can say this film has nothing to do with Asimov and in fact goes against everything Asimov was trying to say in his books. Esentially 20th Fox bought the rights to I, Robot ages ago but never used them. The scripot for the film was wrote by somebody else but was modified slightly (character names, throw in 3 laws etc.) and the name I, Robot was used.
