The Whole Ten Yards
Writer: Mitchell Kapner
Director: Howard Deutch
Starring: Bruce Willis, Matthew Perry
Rated: 12a
Running Time: 98mins
Trailer: Win Media Player, Quicktime and Real Player
Tagline: They missed each other. This time, their aim is better.
The Whole Ten Yards is a classic example of a sequel that dissapoints. Instead of doing something slightly different, putting a twist on the original or just plain being better, it does exactly what The Whole Nine Yards did, and as a result feels like a slightly naff deja vu.
I'll say it now, i enjoyed the film. I laughed at the bits i was supposed to laugh at. But I can say with certainty that this was because I have the uncanny ability to enjoy subpar films and not because it was particularly funny.
Perry and Willis both revisit their characters from Nine Yards, Oz and Jimmy respectively. Willis is great as Jimmy the Tulip, he fits the character extremely well. However, whereas in Nine Yards Perry was very funny, in this one he just seems to be going through the motions because that's what he's supposed to be doing. There's no real spark to his performance. Which is a pity, because when he's on form, he's a great comic actor.
As mentioned, the story is fairly standard, and plays out with not many surprises if you're slow, none at all if you're on the ball.
If you loved The Whole Nine Yards this film is definitey worth a rental. If you didn't like that film, don't even bother with this one.
