If this does definitely go through, and from what i gather it's by no means certain, I would like to see Whedon writing the film and someone else directing.

Writing is where Whedon's talent really lies. He has directed some excellent television eps to be sure, but until we've seen Serenity we won't really know if he can nail the writing/directing combo on a feature film.

I'm not a fan of this idea at all, I'd love to be proved wrong, but Idon't know if Joss hasn't lost "it" over the years

I'm more interested in the way he'll take the whole X-verse, dark and moody or ...

Anyone remember what happened to Batman after Tim Burton jumped ship!!!

On the basis of Astonishing X-Men, I have no doubt that Joss Whedon can write the X-Men - ensemble super-natural character pieces are his interest in any case. He's a long-time fan of the comics. Astonishing X-Men mixes Whedon's humour with a light tone, but not one that is afraid to shy away from serious, even disturbing, subject-matter.

More generally, I do not agree that Joss Whedon has 'lost it'. Where his attention is focused always brings us good television - Firefly was the true inheritor of the wit and spirit of early Buffy. I too, however, wait for the Firefly movie to show us what his film direction is like, but I remain optomistic.

P.S. Last I heard, it was not that Whedon was 'going to do X-men', but rather that he had expressed an interest that he was hoping Fox (?) would take him up on.

Definitiely a good thing if it happens. Astonighsing Xmen has shown what a true grasp of the Xmen he has in terms of tone. Personally I believe the first Xmen would have been much better if they hadnt overhauled so much of his version of the script.

We dont know if he will write and direct or just direct (has Joss ever directed anything he HASNT written?). After the excellent X2, perhaps its time to give it to someone else. Yes Batman went pear shaped when Burton left, but who did they give it to? Look what happened to the Superman series when the creators DIDNT move on.

Joss is the man, pure and simple.

Yes, I'd like to see this happen. It seems likely to me that the studio would want to see how Serenity did first, but then Hollywood seems to have no problem letting people with only ads and music videos to their name direct big-budget movies...
