Bryan Singer has confirmed, during a Q&A session at an X-Men 2 showing, that Brandon Routh (pronounved rowth) will indeed play Kal-El in the new film. He seems very excited about it, stating that he thought Routh has the perfect physicality for the role.

Coolness.

Apparently, before Singer pitched the film to WB, he pitched it to Richard Donner first to get his approval. Donner loved it, which has to be good news.

More coolness in the fact that Singer said he will definitely use the John Williams theme tune for the film. Cool

Guess that'll stop the wild rumours that Tom Welling's 'top secret' talks with the studio execs are Superman related.
Following on from this, Cinescapehave reported that there are six actresses who are the main contenders for the part of Lois.

Mischa Barton (The O.C.)
Charisma Carpenter (Angel)
Mia Kirshner (The Crow: City of Angels)
Evangeline Lilly (Lost)
Natalie Portman (Star Wars: Attack of the Clones)
Keri Russell (Felicity)

To be honest, I'm not sure I can see any of them working as Lois. I'd actually like someone who can act, so that takes out Mischa Barton and Keri Russell. I'd say Portman's a little too young. I haven't seen any episodes of Lost yet so I don't know about Evangeline Lilly, but I'd say Charisma Carpenter is probably the best choice out of those.

IMHO Evangeline Lilly is perfect, and I think when you see Lost you will agree she can act. On the other hand Lost is my favourite series at the moment, and I really rather they didnt have to write her out.

Either her or Natalie Portman... please God not Mischa Barton... that would be a disaster. I'd heard a rumour that Amy Acker had also tested too.

Well the Smallville fans are in uproar that Tom didn't get the role. I'm cool with the casting of Brandon Routh. He's an unknown, which was always Bryan Singer's intention. He certainly has the look of Clark Kent about him and i can imagine him as Superman too. Hopefully it'll be a film worth seeing...

Now i wonder what the role was/is that Tom Welling couldn't talk about...was it Superman or is it something entirely different. Depending upon where you read, Tom turned down the role (of Superman) for fear of being typecast <shrug> I also heard that he had the role in the bag and was taking his time about making the final decision to sign (if he had, Smallville would've ended this fourth season)...
