Smells like a gimmick to me, along the lines of the californians trying to outlaw master and slave devices
I must admit to being a little puzzled as to why GMail is so great? So it has 1GB - so what? If I download POP3 mail onto my computer I can have as much space as I want. I suppose the advantage is having your entire mailbox anywhere you want it - but then I'd rather just terminal services into my PC (if I had broadband anymore .
They're probably relying on the fact that 99% of it will be spam, and the same spam will be in everyones mailboxes so it will compress REALLY well!

Offcource there are some privacy concerns with storing your email on a server in an unknown country... gmail-is-too-creepy.com
For the people that are interested it's possible to have your Gmail in your favourite (windows based) pop3 program (outlook, thunderbird etc)
