Norton Antivirus/Firewall Advice Needed.

I have both on my computer and the subscriptions are up for renewal at the end of the month. As always i'm completely confused as to go about it. I know there's a phone number at Symantec that i can call but i'd like to hear how you guys went about it or any advice on how to go about it.

I know you can renew on line. Is the renewal done on line itself or are you just ordering the software so that you can do it yourself when it arrives?

Costs?... is it cheaper renewing on line or would it just be easier to go to PC World for example and buy the newer versions?

And why are the instructions like reading gobbledegook?... i'm starting to get into a bit of a panic about it even though i've still got a couple of weeks left til they need renewing....

It was my brother in law who installed the original software last year and i can't remember how he did it... d'oh!!!..

Any help, advice would be massively appreciated as always (I'm hoping someone can help

You can renew online, if your subscription is up soon, there should be a link somewhere which will take you to the Symantec website and you just put in your card details as with ordering anything else online.

There is no new software to install, what you are renewing is your subscription to download updates. If you didn't renew, the programme would still work after your subscription is up, but you wouldn't get the updates for new viruses etc, so it would steadily become more useless.

The cost will be cheaper to renew than to buy a new updated version in the shops. I don't know to be honest whether an updated version offers any advantages, someone with the newest version may be able to answer this.

Well I have Norton 2004, and to be honest it doesn't appear to do much more than 2002 which is what I had before.

Renewing your subscription isn't too expensive IIRC and it will then ensure that you antivirius program recognises the newest evil little bugs out there

ETA: I got a pop up from Norton to upgrade both my NAV and my Firewall, so for now the NAV is upgraded for another year and a lot cheaper than i'd expected so i'm happy about that.

Just got to figure out the Firewall one, i'm assuming that'll just work the same way as the NAV to upgrade?

Doesn't SP2 just automatically turn on the built-in XP firewall and add a new program that spots spy-ware?

This morning, my PC has been under repeated attacks from a Trojan Horse. Checking my NAV and Firewall, it seems that today i've had nine attacks from one hacker. I even have an IP address.

Would it be possible to report this IP address to someone, if so, where, to whom etc?.. any thoughts? Would it be something worth doing because these little toe rags severely try my patience (to put it politely) and if there's something i can do to stop someone like this, then i'll have a damned good go!

Try your ISP. Many of them have an abuse@isp.com style e-mail address to report such things to. You could try running a "WHOIS" search for the IP address in question against the RIPE database which stores IP address allocations and should tell you which ISP this IP address belongs to. Go Here and enter the IP address you have found.

If you're not sure how to use this send me an e-mail (in my profile) with the IP address in question and I'll see what I can find out for you.

Unfortunately, it's not a guaranteed solution for a couple of reasons. If they are are hardened hacker, they are probably spoofing (faking) the IP address to hide their identity, or they have compromised another machine, probably without the owners knowledge, and are using that as the platform to launch their attack on you.
