Really Technical Question. C Programming

I'm just getting started with C Programming and I'm trying to rewrite a couple of Basic programs which read the BIOS and the windows registry.

The BIOS reading needs to scan through memory locations looking for a certain string "_SM_" but I'm having trouble with reading the pointers

I think the compiler I'm using is a windows one and so when I try to read memory locations outside the program area is fails.
I'm thinking that I need to have a DOS32 compiler to do this.

Any programming guru's out there with some ideas.

Learn the basics of C before you take on something like that.

Windows (anything NT based anyway) probably won't let you read that info from memory without a special routine due to the way its secured, although you may be able to get windows to provide the info you need.

Registry shouldn't be a problem.

You will probably need alot of code to do this tho.

I agree with what Guffer said. I did my degree in computer programming and used predominatley C or C++. It's a very fickle language and what you're attempting to do ain't the easiest. What compiler/program you using?

What you are trying to do is indeed not the most easy thing to do in C. However it's also true that it has been done before. On the net you should be able to find some examples of how it has been done before. You might be able to get some inspiration from those sources too. Normally the tools used are pretty well defined in that kinda examples.

Vinnie Just because you don't beleive in something, doesn't mean it's not true.

The compiler I'm using is Digital Mars C/C++ Compiler and notepad

for the editor.

I originally wrote a VB3 program for doing a software audit of the company machines, ut you have to have vbrun300.dll with it and another program (SMBIOSD.EXE) to read the bios info. I'm now trying to do it all as one program in C.

I used to use a Borland C++ compiler. Can't remember what version or anything though
