Nintendo goes for a Wii

Gamers and techies alike have been awaiting more information on Nintendos new console, known in development as the Revolution. Nintendo are attempting to distance themselves from the mighty Sony and MS competition and launch a games console that isnt for people who think of themselves as gamers.

Posting breakthrough motion sensing technology, Nintendo hopes to win people over with new intuitive controls that dont require mastery of 10 buttons 2 analogue sticks and a D-pad.

Like the Project 64 which became simple Nintendo 64 and the Dolphin which became the GameCube, the Revolution has now been officially renamed... the Wii....

Pronounced 'We', the name is supposed to cunjour the 'communal' experience of gaming. Expect plenty of people saying 'why-eye' or 'wih-ee'. Can you get more pretentious? Or Confusing? Or more able to play into the hands of your critics (say it with me "its a load of complete Wii).

Nintendo seem to be bucking the trend in another way, by chosing the name least likely to succeed.

am i the only one thinking this was named by a geordie??
and after seeing video of some of the gameplay concepts nintendo are aiming for (although nothing of actual games), im quietly excited by this - especially if they launch it at the low pricepoint theyve threatened...
dunno if id be interested to buy one - but im certainly gonna find someone who gets one and try it out...

What was wrong with the name 'Revolution'?

People are going to be calling that all the way through anyway...why change the name now? I for one got used to the name Revolution.

Nintendo have shot themselves in the foot by the looks of it!

thelostsailor If I didn't break it then you would have nothing to do!

I've been loyal to Nintendo for my last 2 consoles (N64 and Game Cube), but I'm so sick of the kiddy games, and the good titles that come out on the other 2 platforms. I finally got so fed up the other day, that I went out and got a PS2 and I'm on the mailing list for when PS3 start becoming available.

I'm sorry Nintendo, but you've screwed up too many times. You may make the more powerful console, but you keep getting the games wrong

Amusingly, when games developers have been interviewed by the IGN website about their forthcoming websites, many have said they will continue to use the name Revolution, and asked if the journalists just swap the word out when they publish it!

Having said that Im eagerly looking forward to how the games actually perform come E3.

there is actually some credence being given to the idea that nintendo is pulling a massive PR stunt with this - sony was expected to hog the limelight at the upcoming E3, so its entirely possible this is just an attempt bythe big N to get some coverage - especially if they hold another press conference in a week to say "ok, we've listened to public opinion - we're going back to revolution"

Oh Im sure it chose to cause a storm of attention, but not so that they can change their mind, thats not a message you want to send on a new product, that

1) with all the complicated aspects of a console you cant even get the name right
2) that you have so little confidence in your product youll change something as soon as people say they dont like it.

Im sure they also told us now rather than the common sense choice of E3 as basically the Ninty presentation would have just collapsed right then.

Theyve set themselves up now, with attention at a high, the games better be un-smegging-believable, and ahem, revolutionary, to translate this attention into both respect and hunger for the product.

If all we get is a standard PS2, X-Box launch lineup, with all the class games nothing more than early glimpses, they are, or rather Wii are, screwed.
