I'm odd as I like coffee with a little milk and no sugar at home, but at work I have to have it black. I think it's due to it being vending stuff and the milk is really naff.

My other half is just plain odd as he has 2 sugars (gross) and it's half water and half milk (ewwwww).

No doubt one of the science types round these parts can explain *why* pouring water in off the boil is the only way to make drinkable coffee, but it is!

(Well if you want to cheat, pouring a drop of cold water into boiling coffee also works, but don't tell anyone I'm spreading such heresy.)

Well, making coffee is basic extraction. The hotter the water the more kinds substances you extract form the coffee. If you pour in water that is too hot, you also start to extract all kinds of substances you don't want in your cup.

No, that won't work, 'cause once the nasty stuff is extracted from the beans and into your cup, adding a drop of cold water isn't magically going to remove them from your cup again...

Well the proof is in the tasting, so magic be praised.

My Dad has similar issues with making tea. He says it should always be made in a tea pot, and never in the cup, and the milk should always be added after the tea has been poured.

Personally I can't see how it makes a difference

Well loose-leaves are always going to taste better than teabag sawdust, don't have a clue about the milk though. *Prods the expert on cafine-based refreshment from his slumber*
