I'd have to *seriously* be recording a lot from Sky, that clashes, to justify that kind of expense

I haven't come across anyone who has it yet, but so far the cost seems to be putting most people off getting it.

I know it sounds a lot (heck, it is) but if you break it down:

would you pay :

60p a week to be able to record one channel while watching another.

60p a week to be able to pause live tv when the phone rings etc

60p a week to be able to record without tapes (90% of what i tape is just for one watch then erase)

60p a week to record by selecting progs from the on screen guide (like tvplus but better)

sounds more reasonable that way doesnt it?

I've been keeping an eye on it, but it doesn't seem to be foolproof yet.

Sky are still ironing out a few bugs and some of the home entertainment/cinema forums that I wander around seem to have a fair few posts relating to software upgrades.

Have a look in the DVD and Home Cinema Hardware forum and you'll see a fairly lengthy Tivo thread right at the top, plus some other TiVo/Sky + threads.

There are a few pepole who have manaded to fit their Tivos with ethernet cards so that they can offload ant stuff that they want to keep when the Tivo's disc fills up.


Now that is cool

Check out the ReplayTV 4000 from SonicBlue in the US. It comes fitted with an Ethernet port as standard and the web site makes a feature of sharing your recorded video content on the Internet, as well as connecting multiple ReplayTV units and PCs! As you can imagine, the film and TV companies in the US are apoplectic about this.

Now, a PAL version with 802.11 connectivity would be very nice indeed...

I'm sure it would... but what does it do?

PAL = TV signal "type" used in the UK and Europe (the USA use NTSC)

802.11 - I think should be 802.1 = Network (Ethernet) enabled.

So, Ming is saying and UK version with a network card

Close. 802.11a and 802.11b are current commercially available wireless networking standards. Wired networks are less than practical for most homes and most homes with a broadband connection will have it running to a PC which is usually not in the living room so while the idea of a networked ReplayTV unit is appealling, it's only practical if it supports wireless networking.
