T21 Mums & Dads - Advice needed please

What does chicken pox look like when it starts? Or, to be more precise... Ben has come home from nursery tonight with 6 or 7 spots on his shoulder and the back of his neck, and 6 in a band across the bottom of his back; he also has a couple of very faint spots on his tummy. They look like little red pimples, and a couple of them have a definite white head on. He doesn't have a fever, although he is flushed (but then again, he's teething again). He isn't irritable, doesn't have a cold, but did have a really bad one a few weeks ago.

Is this chicken pox? And what can I do for him if it is?

sound like it could be - mine started across my tummy but my brothers started across his back.
best call NHS dirct - they'll have a better idea. 0845 1234 i think.

Sounds like it to me, but check with your GP for sure. Better get it over and done with 'tho it can be distressing for the baby. When mine had it Billy was covered *everywhere* but Sam only got a few spots. Just be generous with the Calamine & Calpol and socks on hands as often as poss (especially in bed). Good Luck

Don't the spots usually come out after the infectious period has passed?

I wouldn't have the first clue either of what to look for so I'd be taking babe straight to the GP.

All I know is to keep them cool, plenty of fluid and lots and lots of Calpol and Calamine Lotion.

*Hugs* to you both - hope Ben gets himself sorted soon (Georgia wouldn't want him having Chicken Pox at their wedding now

Don't the spots usually come out after the infectious period has passed?

Rash first, then blisters, then after a few days you get the scabs. I think the infectious period is over when all the blisters have scabbed over, but don't quote me on it. I do know that if he has got it he will have been infected a couple of weeks ago.

It says in "the book" (lol) that he's infectious 2 days before the spots and until all the scabs have gone, which is usually 10-14 days after the spots appear. Which is nice. Which means that he can't go to nursery and one of us is going to have to take time off (or alternate days).

Am now looking up about constructive and unfair dismissal, because I know my boss is going to do her pieces if I take any time off.

awww hunny, well sounds like chicken pox's to me!! although take him to the Dr's hun better to have it checked. All mine (apart from James) have had them and luckly didn't have too many spots. Although having them under two means he can get them again

Check the nursery policey some nurserys will allow children to go because once the spots appear on one child they are all likely to get it owing to the fact they are infectious before the spots appear.

Big hugs and yup all you can do for him if it is is plenty of calamine lotion.

Curiouser and curiouser - all the spots had gone this morning when he got up !!

He's right as rain, fit as a fiddle and other such cliches, and has gone to nursery. Absolutely no sign of where the spots were... perhaps it was the latest ploy to worry the life out of mummy and daddy?

Heat rash?

Still, thanks for the advice guys, when he no doubt goes down with it at some point I shall have enough calamine laid in to sink a battleship !!

Hannah's always coming out in spots and stuff, usually its a heat rash. She's recovering from a cold at the moment, her first one since she left hospital nearly a year ago, and she hates her nose being wiped... makes her go berserk.. i am not kidding, she screams and screams...

And yep, i believe they do stuff like this to give their mummies and daddies a big scare!

Hmmmmm Georgia has now come up in these curious spots. She has a cold but seems better today, is teething yet again but on the whole is still being her usual impish self

I don't think its the pox or measles etc as I seem to remember one of my friends daughters having this and the GP said that they can get these spots when they have a cold as its the body's way of getting rid of the virus/infection etc etc.

Still.... will be keeping a close eye on her - convention season is starting - can't have her being ill now can I

Jola: sounds like a viral cold. When Joel was about four, he came down with a stinking cold with a really nasty cough, i took him to the docs, and he said it was a viral cold... two days later he (Joel) comes out in little pink spots all over his body... i nearly had a heart attack.. for a while we thought it was German Measles, we even thought it might've been Measles, despite the fact he'd had his MMR. Another trip to the docs, and he said it wasn't either, and the rash was just symptomatic of his cold.. the rash cleared after 3 or 4 days..
