Premature baby charity fundraising
Random
Okay, since the thread Spike started seems to have descended into the usual chaos associated with anything he touches, I thought we'd better start again from scratch.
There seems to be a lot of support on the boards here for a fundraiser for a baby care charity. Two main ideas seem to have developed:
1: A sponsored jailbreak thingy. This has the advantage of fitting well with the character of a lot of the people here, but is not so good in that the younger members probably won't be allowed to take part, and the Mums, who I figure will be the keenest fundraisers, won't be able to take time out for it.
2: Another parachute jump. The advantage here is that we have the expertise needed on hand - the disadvantages are that inevitably an unfair amount of the work will land on Desire's shoulders, as the person with the experience, and again people are excluded from taking part.
I don't see why we couldn't do one of these, but I don't think it's enough on its own. We need ideas still.
There's also the question of which charity. I'm no expert in this field, but unless anyone knows different it looks to me that there are two main options: Bliss, which concentrates on treating babies, and Tommy's Campaign, which researches causes of premature birth and other complications. Do people have a preference, or should we just split the money 50-50?
Both charities have fundraising departments, Tommy's Campaign seems more organised but Bliss has links with Skyline for parachute jumps. What I'd like to do is talk to them and see if they have ideas about what we can do, given that half the people interested probably will have to take part from home but the other half would be prepared to fling themselves out of an aircraft.
So - people's views? Do I have a general 'okay' to approach the charities?
Red Witch
Yep, yep and yep. I have no idea how many questions there were there, but I agree wholeheartedly.
I'd be very up for the parachute jump as it's likely to be a one day event, I'd have to know more about timescales, locations, etc if it was the 'Jail-Break'.
Actually, my dad is a prison officer, I wonder what help his local nick could provide: chains, prison denims, sponsorship?
RWx
Whistler
Yep, I'd be up for either of these options. Having fun while raising money for a good cause gets the thumbs up from me
Keenangel
I'll happily sponsor someone for either of these, which ever is chosen.
Most of these charities have websites, i know "Tiny Lives" (the preemie baby charity based at the RVI in Newcastle) do.
They will send out a fund raising pack as required, though they do accept general donations.. this is what we did
Charities i'm aware of are BLISS, Tommy's Campaign, and of course Tiny Lives
Definitely get a thumbs up from me Random... in fact two thumbs up
Just a suggestion: but would anyone know whether the hospital where little Jennifer Brown was born at have a charitable organisation?.. maybe we could make the donation to them?
Jola
Yep - count me and Len in whatever - He's the daredevil I'll do the babysitting
coolkat
Hmmmm, i like both the ideas, and i can't wait until we do either one. Could someone explain to me what a jailbraik thing is??
And Jola..... i'll be hiding behind you
Evil Lawyer Chick
Count me in, as a very very premature baby myself its something i feel strongly about. I would love to take part in the parachute jump if it happens...maybe i wont end up in hospital this time...jailbreak also sounds fun - not to clear on it though but it sounds good.
Desire
Random - how thoughtful of you to think of extra workload for me in sorting another parachute jump! *hugs* thanks hon..
However = I would *love* to get people together for another one, I really don't mind - I was able to send a cheque off for £4417.66p to Breakthrough and it was a fantastic feeling writing that amount!!! Well worth some additional phonecalling and letter writing!
But yeah - my services are always available if required (no naughty puns please!)
White Hart
Not sure if I could take part in either - but I will happily sponsor all and sundry (within reason anyway!)
My best friend has just told me she's pregnant, which brings the subject closer to my heart. If there is any complication (and I pray there won't be), it'd be nice to feel I'd helped support the charities who provide care in such situations.
Yvonne
I'm perfectly willing to fling myself out of a plane - especially as I hear we get attached between the legs of a strapping instructor

Actually, I'm willing to lend a hand again

Another fundraising idea (a play on the jail break one) would be to put people in cages (a la the Wish) and they have to try and raise money from people around them (by what ever means are legal) before they're allowed to be released.
Could be done at Pages or the T21 party.
Getting life sized cages could be a problem but it would make it easier for those who cant get time off to participate.
Stoo
Actually, knowing some of the Nos regulars, I wouldn't think it'd be as much of a problem as you might think

maybe it would be possible to do both the jail break and the parachute jump to raise more money, as not everyone would want to jump outta a plane and not everyone would wanna run around the uk. but the cage thing could be good for raising a little bit, but would i get to be locked in with a woman? anyway i'll look up any info i can find on the jailbreak thing to see how its usually done now.

right i've been looknig at several sites and they are all more or less the same with rules. you have 24 hours to get as far away from a certain place in teams of 2 to 4 people with no money. ususally in fancey dress so i suppose we could dress as buffy characters if we really wanted to. then for each mile we get we get money. so when you think about we can only really ask people to sponsour us between 10 and 20p for each mile coz if we do 100 miles at a pound for example they'd have to give us 100 quid. i think we could also get a majour company to sponsour us too. but like if we are in teams it'll be better as its safer and will be more fun and stuff.
KaTiEStar
I doubt i could do either but i'm willing to help with whatever i can, being a premature baby, along with both of my sisters, one of whom sadly died. It was in 1979, she was quite a few weeks early and the hospital didn't have the equipment to save her. So i'll do whatever i can.

I'm actually starting to like this idea more and more

Parachute jump: I'm not chucking myself outta nothing not no how, but I'll happily do the whole "drinking before/drinking after/standing with hands over eyes in a field" scenario
Jailbreak: Like the idea (specially the 'in teams' bit), sure Mr Wicked would babysit while I galavant around the country (hell, he's probably used to it by now) (he'll probably pay someone to take me away)
Let me know if there's anything I can do to help

Okay, this came to me this morning while i was dressing Hannah.
Can any of our T21'ers knit?... or have mums or dads, grandma's, auntie's, siblings etc who can?.....
Why? i hear you ask?...
When Hannah was in the SCBU last year, the nurses told me how chronically short of woollens they were for the little ones... especially hats and cardigans (not jumpers)as the teenies (as the nurses called them) need to stay warm constantly, even though they're in incubators... so why not knit some little woolies to donate to your nearest Unit?...
Also, if some of our T21 parents have little vests or pj's that their children have out grown, why not donate them?.. .as it isn't just very tiny babies in the SCBU.. there are full term babies in there too... think about it... i guarantee the Units would greatly appreciate it
KaTiEStar
i can knitt! and croshay (thats how it's said not spelt )
i make neat clothes s i'll be up for that one, plus the little old lady up the road from me makes an insane amount of knitted blankets and i have loads of baby sized ones, i can donate
Velvet Glove
As I said on the thread that went astray... I'll certainly be up for helping in any way I can
Just for the record folks, when ELC says that she hopes she won't end up in hospital this time - she wasn't even jumping! Us Yukker-Jumpers didn't suffer any injuries (thank goodness) unless you count frayed nerves & bitten fingernails. Honest!
White Hart
Another idea...
As you may know, I live in a pub and my fiance runs it. Well, tonight was quiz night.
And I suddenly thought.....
How about a charity quiz?
What do you people think? We could probably do it on a Saturday as that's quite a quiet night, if enough people above and beyond the usual come then there's no problem with free drinks as prizes, and we could charge entry and donate the proceeds to charity!
Let me know if you're interested!

Is that an offer to host it? Because it occurs to me that a jailbreak has to start from somewhere, and while I was vaguely thinking of Trafalgar Square a pub sounds a pretty good idea too, and why not combine the two?

we could indead combine the 2, but if i did the jailbreak i wouldn't be there for the quiz and i could be a valuablke member to the team. but yeah we could combine them that way we'd make more.
Evil Lawyer Chick
Whoops - sorry bout that one VG...thats right, for those of you that were'nt there and did'nt hear, my injury happend while i was watching the jump...i would have been safer jumping out of the plane!!

I'm also really liking the idea of a jailbreak - not sure of the idea of dressing up though, more concerned with staying warm and not getting lost!! I got lost in the Alton Towers woods - never mind a countryside!
SPIKE
well if you were in my group you'd never get lost. i know my way around the uk like the pilsbury dough boy knows an oven.

Well, more people = more beer sold, which is always a good thing As long as we have a fair idea of numbers in advance so we can organise staffing etc I don't think there'd be any problem with that.

Hey, we weren't lost! We just doubled back when we realised the path we were on wasn't going where we thought it was, we were never lost though

'kay, I've just had a chat with Bliss, who are going to send me a pack with ideas for events (and who may be dropping by on the site for a look - so best behaviour everyone ) I'm still looking for that brilliant plan that lets the home-bound people take part, rather than just support from a distance.
Haven't spoken to Tommy's Campaign yet. Will do soon.
Jola
Quizzes are Good

Staffing?? Just give us access to the bar ... we can do the rest

Ohhh quiz night sounds brilliant! I would have to maybe be Quizmaster though as I would severly hamper any team I was on as I am such a dunce!
/me bags the Quizmaster job as long as someone has some questions or I could always grab someones copy of Trivial Pursuit for some questions!
White Hart - roughly where is your pub hun? Which part of the country & are there any cheapish hotels we could use to crash over?
White Hart
We're on the outskirts of Oxford. There are B&Bs fairly close and a Holiday Inn which is a taxi ride away but may be cheaper.
Tim runs the regular quiz here and would probably want to be quizmaster. I have run the idea past him and he's sounding quite favourable although it isn't a definite yes yet I'm afraid. He'll probably want more idea of what's involved before giving a final yea or nay.
We shall see, anyway. The more interest there is the more likely I am to be able to persuade him!

**wishes she lived near Oxford** as I *love* quizzes... am quite good at them
But after Sheffield, i'll not be able to travel anywhere else for a while.. so i will be there in spirit..
Though we're hoping to be staying in Winchcombe sometime in August for a week
SPIKE
ok regarding the quiz, i have some great questions in a shooting stars quiz book. regarding the jail break, if we do it theres a few things we need to get sorted, each team will need a camera so they can photograph proof as to how far they have been, also how would we get back the next day? we'd probably have to get back with no money. also we just seem to be taklknig about things so i think we should like set some dates and teams soon so we can get start getting sponsors, also do we wanna do this or the parachute jump, or both?
Red
Was talking something over with Random ... an idea that I'm fairly sure was similar to a game show a few years back, but can NOT recall the name of it!
Anyway, can use any major city (eg London), split into pairs, or groups of maybe 4, and each team is given a list of items to acquire, photos to take and tasks to perform within the city limits. They have a total of 8 hours, maybe 12 depending on the list, and the first team back with everything, or the most, gets the kudos.
You can be sponsored for each item, task, photo you manage successfully, or just a general figure for doing something so silly
Certainly in London, the travel cost would be minimal, simply a one day travel card.
Could be done with or without fancy dress just to make it a little bit dafter (and possibly let you get away with a bit more )
This wouldn't necessarily be an overnight thing, so people who wouldn't normally be able to take part in stuff could join in. And ages needen't be a restriction, as long as younger members are paired with sensible adults (and have permission).
Tis just another idea to add to the mix.
(But if anyone can remember the name of that show I'd be *so* grateful!)
SPIKE
oh i remember that it was called go getters and had some real real cool celebritys like cheggers (who i almost met one time) and michalka strachan and bruno brooks. yeah that is a good idea i'd liek to do that, but i dunno if i'd prefert that or the jail break as they both seem great ideas.
SPIKE
ok really thinking about it i think the go getters thing may be better and can be done by anyone and theres no risks involved, with the jail break we could get arrested or something plus we could get hurt or something and stranded in the country side with an axe murderer. so if we do the go getters thing who wants to do it? see i wanna do it and i think we should dress up, each team could have a different theme, like the mafia, farmers and army men or something. i really think we shoudl decide what we're doing quick coz i'm looknig forward to doing something.
Evil Lawyer Chick
Looks like another London trip for me
coolkat
Hehe, i really love Reds idea, though i'd have to be paired with a responsible adult *looks around but doesn't see any*
Velvet Glove
/me stands up & waves at coolkat then sits down again because she realises that she isn't really *that* responsible
SPIKE
i'm very responsible so you can be in my team. so like how about we make a list of people who wanna be in a team and do the thing and maybe then email someone with ideas of the tasks, then that person picks out the best and shows us the tasks on the day of it.

Slow down, slow down... I'm still gathering information from the charities and looking at what might work best. Lists of people and stuff like that can wait for the time being, okay?

SPIKE, your intentions are admirable and understandable, but as Random has already said, he's still collating information.. stuff like this takes a little time, and we want to do it right don't we?.. believe me, whichever charity we decide on to donate any cash too, will be
