i think i skipped out of my first year modules like this and only turned up for the tests as i'd done all teh stuff at A-level - but i remember finding it all interesting first time round
Understanding Reality and Reporting Fact!!
Right, I've just finished my first week of lectures at Uni and i'm home for the weekend!! yey!! I'm studying Drama and Media, one of the moduals on the media side of things is called Understanding Reality and Reporting Fact
Just wondered if anyone has done this kind of thing before as i'm finding it really interesting but all my mates think it's as dull as a realy dull thing on a dull day in dullsville!! Basically if you don't know, it's about how perception and reality are different things and how this applies to the media and the phycology behind it all, but we are starting simple and looking at optical illusions!! which is not only fun and interesting but it's a nice way to spend an hour leture!!
So any views??...............

Sounds really interesting to me!
What are you doing home for the weekend already though? It's nice to see you back, but you'll miss out on all the socialising!

Sounds kinda like there's three sides to every story, your side, my side and the truth. I think...

Understanding Reality and Reporting Fact
... perception and reality are different things ...
I've never done a media studies course, but being the pretentious existentialist type that I am it sounds right up my street...
I do have some books on the subject (and not just the black polar-neck french type) that I think you might be interested in if you want suggestions for reading matter.

I've never studied anything like that before, but it does sound really interesting. I spent 3 years at uni studying textiles so I can't be of much help in this field, I'm afraid. I can, however, tell you plenty about the construction of yarn and fabrics, plus various dyeing and printing techniques. And, no, that hasn't been of any use since I graduated

hmm it sounds kind of like what we're doing right now
like the newspapers are selective of what they choose to publish 'who chooses the news?' is what we're studying now, and also why? like what benefits they get from it etc. it all comes back to money really heh economic system
had a really interesting talk about society's and values. like...ok for instance, some places beleive that women should not be educated, adn the women there are happy with that because the values that have been instilled on them mkae them think a certain way. so we were saying how liek that isn't right at all, and my friend was trying to say someone should do something as its not right....but, to them its normal and right, as its their values, and even we aren't right about this because what we think stems from the values of this society...so we only think they're wrong because of our views....
get it? :S confusing i know! lol
hmm off on a tangent again rach *sigh* oh well! spose the site is called tangent21

Sounds cool!
OK, here's a couple:
Ways of Seeing - John Berger
Mind bendingly stunning book, yet incredibly accessible, and seems to me to be aimed at exactly the subjects you are looking at.
The Outsider - Albert Camus
Just. Because. OK, I promised not to suggest chain-smokingly-black-polarneck-wearingly-achingly-frenchly-cool existentialist stuff, but I lied. Everyone should read this. And listen to the Cure's 'Killing An Arab'...
