I dont think it is selfish to want to keep music to a smallish group of fans. Those fans discovered the music without being told it was cool, without marketing. Smaller but talented groups who suddenly become mainstream, only to be out in the cold again a month later when everyone is bored of their hit is something akin to finding a beautiful unspoiled holiday destination, and then having millions of Ibiza clubbers come and rampage the place for a week, then disappear leaving their rubbish behind.

Sorry, but isn't that a little bit selfish? Surely if music is good, everyone deserves to hear it. It's when music's popularity starts to ruin it (ie. it just becomes boring) that it's a problem.
Anticipating more rowdy clubbers, the locals put up a load of kak hotels for next year, only nobody ever comes (this is akin to the rushed album they produce immediately after a number one hit)
Myself, i'm into absolutely any music as long as I like it. I still think Britney Spears' 'Baby One more Time' is a good song. (She hasn't done any other good songs though) It's annoying when everyone laffs, then when a couple of people cover it they start saying how its a great song.
