It's been pointed out to me by a source who shall remain anonymous 
that everytime Evil Willow posts in a General Chat thread that that thread stops? Is this true, is EW the new Thread Killer of T21...answers on a post below please

Not that I want to kill off the thread or anything, but here's an excerpt from my thesis
Aspinall et al have shown that the asymmetric synthesis of cyanohydrins via anhydrous lanthanide chloride pybox catalysis can, in some cases, produce enantiomeric excesses of nearly 90%. The major drawback with these systems however is that lanthanide chlorides and their complexes are extremely hygroscopic. As a result, the reaction must be performed under rigorously anhydrous conditions in an inert atmosphere and using Schlenk equipment.

Posted: 00:28 Dec 02 2002 Basically some reaction produces a nice high yeld of something or other, but the catalyst used to increase the yeld of the reaction absorbs moisture like mad, so you have to run the reaction in a dry environment, under vacuum to avoid it screwing up
