Please please please help, im having such a hard time with this research!!!!
PLEASE PLEASE HELP!!!! Media module researchy thing!!!!
I've ,for some unknown reason , decided that Im going to find out what original 70s punk music meant to its fans and how it influenced their dress sense and behaviour and stuff!
Then I'm going to compare it to the music subcultures of today.
You could help me so much by doing any of the following:
If you were a fan of punk in the 70s can you tell me what the music meant/stood for to you and how it influenced you???
OR
Tell me what kind of music you are into now and tell me what you think it means/stands for to you and in general and how it influences you!!!
Either post it here or email it to me but PLEASE PLEASE help!!!!! It would mean sooooo much to me!!

Eve: I'm not sure if many of our members are old enough for this (Was that smooth enough? ), but I'd suggest that if anyone's brother or sister is old enough and was one, or maybe a parent, that the members ask them and either post back here or email you directly
I know but did you read the 'or' bit?

OK, on your first request, your problem is that punk, in the original form, occured around 1977-9, when personally I was 5-7 years old. For someone to help you there you are really looking for someone who is 40-50.
However, I did read the whole post, so I'll answer your 'OR' bit.
The music I like is very varied. I grew up as a teenager being obsessed by Heavy Metal. If Kerrang did talk about it then I didn't want to know. Being my teen years I still have a bit of nostalgia for some of these bands, including some of the more embarrasing ones.
Although I grew out of that phase I still have a love of all things rock, which has lead to my current love of all things Nu Metal.
But I also fell in love with Indie in the early nineties, as well as grunge. So Baggy and all things alternative are a love of mine.
Then again, the early nineties saw the explosion of rave, as well as having been a late teen when Acid House was around. Consequently I have a love of all things trance as well as housey. Anything with a haunting piano line, kicking bass, and makes you want to shake your thang.
Then there's Motown, Jazz, Prog Rock, Blues, Hip Hop, New Romantics, Punk, and if I keep going with this list this post is going to get waaaaaay out of hand (as if it wasn't already).
To me music is essential. Its a means of expressing externally any number of emotions and of feeling like you are not alone. It's also part of your identity. If I meet someone who went through the same Metal obsession as I did in the late eighties I can almost guarantee a very long conversation and a friendship being born out of it.
It helps to forms bonds in that someone with shared tastes is someone you can identify with. I have no doubt at all that Linkin Park helped to start the wonderful friendship I know have with Flowers.
Music affects my moods. It affects my choice of clothes, the length and colour of my hair - my general appearance. It can move you like no other art form can. I can be in the worst of moods, but play the right tune and I'll be bouncing off the walls with the biggest smile.
To be honest, if I was forced with the choice of going blind or deaf, I'd loose my eyesight. Not being able to hear music again would make life unbearable for me.
Does that help?

I know someone who did something similar about punk for her dissertation at uni and she managed to find quite a few books on the subject. If you can't find anything specifically about punk then i know that theer are definately media books about music subcultures and the extention of music influences into other areas of life. Try the uni/college library. If i remember any specific book titles i'll post them.
As for the other bits... Not old enough for teh punk (and doubt i'll have been into it at all, and i'm not really into any specific genre of music so i can't comment on the comparison. )
Just a thought... you've created a massive task by making your comparison to all the music subcultures of today. It might be worth taking one area where you can see the influences (e.g. Rap/hip-hop) and comparing that instead

Wow! A thread that makes me realise I'm not all that old! Sorry, I was born in 1975 and so was a bit too young for punk. I can't say that I'm influenced by a particular music genre either, as I've always liked individual bands rather than styles and have never really conformed to a type. Sorry, useless I know!
