Yes, but you do say swan-zee. English can be a difficult language to know how to pronounce, even for native speakers. I know if I've only ever seen a word written down I'm not always correct in my pronuniciation. Pronunication is rarely logical, and there's nothing wrong with being incorrect in it occasionally.

Mispronunciation of local place names also bugs me, especially when it's on the local Calendar news - they should know better! The one that really annoys me is when they say Horn-zee for Hornsea (a small East Yorkshire town). Look at how it's spelt, for god's sake! You don't say you're going for a swim in the zee, do you?! (not in English anyway). /end of rant
Not sure I follow your logic. How can people having a moan about how certain words are pronounced (and we all do it) be considered 'distasteful'?

I know this is a light-hearted thread, but I find such complaints a little distasteful.
Well for a start a feeling cannot be logical, only appropriate, which in itself is subjective.

Complaining about legitate alternate pronunciations which are often related to geographical area and culture I don't consider entirely unrelated to racism. Pronunication is one way of mocking people from a different culture, or educational background.
Making racist jokes is 'distasteful'.
People making comments about how certain words are pronounced is human nature.
I believe you answered that one yourself:

And if you don't want people to alter their pronunciation, then why complain about it?

I assume this was the offending line and so I guess Demona's point was that it *was* racist?

Stupid, but funny all the same!
"We began our round at 9:45am. We were almost late because the announcer had a hard time pronouncing Greg's last name and we didn't know we were on the tee. How hard is it to say "K"?"

As I have already said, a lot of what was being complained about was not mispronunciation, it was the pronunciation belonging to an accent, in many cases american.
In any case, speaking with an accent is not quite the same as mispronunciation I would think?
No problems, hun. I deleted my post when you deleted yours.

Thanks, Whistler.
Sorry, I just deleted my post, so your post doesn't make sense now! I read Stoo's post and realised that I should probably contact someone direct instead of taking this thread further off topic, so that's why I deleted it.
Ditto. Anyway the s-con is the first in the dictionary. So that must be right.
