Debit card fraud... likely outcome?

OK... so somehow someone got my debit card number.

They tried to buy electrical goods worth just over Â£500 online on Saturday and although my account was initially charged, the company in question checked the delivery address and reversed the transaction.

They then set their sites a little lower and ordered goods worth just over Â£100 from Tescos Online yesterday.

Surprised by my lower than expected balance, I started asking some questions and it became rapidly apparent what had happened.

The card has been cancelled and Tescos are investigating the transaction having also advised me to call the police.

So, what will the eventual outcome be?

Tescos have a delivery address so in theory the police can quite easily *catch* the culprit. With relatively small sums at stake, do you think they will bother?

Tescos didn't check the card details properly so will they do the decent thing and refund me my money?

Have you aslo contacted the bank about the fradulent transaction. I think the bank and tesco have a responsibility between them make sure that you don't end up out of pocket. Boring as it may seem - read the small print of your account details and the tesco website, they probably have soem sort of fraud guaretee type thingy.

As for teh police they do tend to take this sort of thing quite seriously even with small amounts of money. Even if its only Â£100 of your money - what if they have Â£100 of 10 other peoples - unless this is someone with a personal vendetta against you then its likely that they are doing it to other people too.

Probably from a store or petrol station you have purchased something from who havent incinerated the slips

Since you havent willingly given your card number to anybody the stolen money is between tescos and your bank account and IMO tesco is responsible due to them authorizing those transactions.

The bank will probably try to fob you off by telling you that you have to stand the first Â£50 or so, if so dont accept it. It isnt your fault and happens every day.

Best of luck with it and keep smiling it happens all the time and your not the first or last it will happen to.

Fraud from a bank account sounds really nasty. I appreciate that credit card fraud wouldn't be any better, but its not direct from your hard earned cash whilst the issue is being examined!

Had something like that last year. It was several months after I reported the card lost. I never used the card as I lost it in my Bedroom before it came in date, found it when I was moving house under a load of papers, cut it up and put it in the bin.

The first I knew was when the bank contacted me to confirm that I was not using it as they had a lost card suddenly showing as being used.

It is odd but when you report a card lost they don't disable it but just flag it so it shows up if it was used, unless it has been used fraudulently.

IN my case they refunded about 6 transactions of 50 pounds even before I knew it somehow had been used.

I cut it into little pieces across the strip and along the strip.

Bit odd though.

bipolar "Aurgh! Arugh jeeez!! NO! NO NINA! BAD NINA!"

there was a show (airport i think) and some investigators from an airport was on a case of fraud "fake passports and illegal immegants" stuff using forge documents and all that and when they swarmed in on this house where the suspects were they found bins out back FULL off things like blank passports, credit cards, NI cards, all kinds of ID's and all the equipment to help them make it all look real they even had a pile of papers listing credit card details, bank account details, names and addresses all of real people and these guys had like at least four different alias's ID 's ON them each with different names and country of origins but all same piccers okay droning on a bit now but it was shocking the stuff they had.

As others have said have you contacted the bank. For the last few months i've been working in the Fraud Department of HBOS so i've learned some interesting stuff.

What should happen is they will send you out a FCL (fraud confirmation letter) in which you have to state you did not authorise these transactions. They will then write it off, or get a chargeback from the company, and your account should be credited back with the fraudulent amount, as it was not your spending.

The only thing banks are wary of are ATM transactions as they would have to have your pin number so then you would perhaps be liable.

Hope it gets sorted out for you as easily as it does for the people I do it for.

Got the money back

Sent the police back their official form allowing them to chase it up.

Haven't heard anything since.
