Johann 'Lefties like us' Hari and Bruce 'Rough Old Rummy' Anderson. Proof that scientists are already cloning human beings (subquestion, can someone who actually supports unprovoked military action against another sovereign country still call himself a 'lefty'?)

I read the Indy, but I get my news an extra 24 hours late because I never find time to read it the day I buy it. It's always had a blind spot where Northern Ireland is concerned, taking a more hardline view on the possible justifications for acts of violence than I would. If they're surprised by the Stevens report, they won't share that view with the Irish community, here or over the Sea (why else did Stalker have such a hard time investigating the 'shoot to kill' policy?).

Oh, and I'm still waiting for the delivery of their Classic Film Collection videos to resume, after the 'break' following No. 10 ('Deep Cover'). To paraphrase Ken Campbell, 'that was ten years ago...'

Personally I don't buy any newspapers. I've had a personal hatred of The Mirror ever since they ran a campaign to ban Braindead and a few other horror films because of what they apparently caused those two kids to do to James Bulger.

But anyhoo, this seemed appropriate to this discussion. It was an entry to a competition asking for spoof tabloid front pages.

I can't really get round this one, much as I try. If you buy a tabloid every day, you add to its circulation figures and its power; in this way, you tacitly support everything it's doing. If people didn't buy them, they wouldn't have the power and influence they do, as simple as that.

Because maybe I'm wrong. Maybe they are just lighthearted reads that do no harm. Maybe people don't believe the lies they tell and just have a giggle and are not left with a skewed worldview by reading them. I don't think so, but I'm at least aware of the concept.

To my mind voting Tory is voting for the destruction of lives. Yet I have friends who are Tories, or are floating voters that have considered voting Tory. I think not voting, or a making protest vote in marginal seats is as good as voting for the Tories. Most of my friends couldn't give a flying one. I even have a friend who is proud to have voted for George W Bush. So what? Yes, buying tabloids helps to keep these hate-mongers in pocket and that anyone who wants to form a government in this country had better be nice to Mr Murdoch. Hence we get the governments and politicians the tabloid readers deserve. Which sickens me.

But people are far more complex than 'tabloid reader' or 'Tory voter'. To sum up someone’s worth by one aspect of who they are is too shallow. Personally, I try to judge people by the total of what they are, not just one aspect. It's not like I'm without fault myself. I can hardly ask for perfection from my friends when I'm less than perfect myself.
