Family Tree/Genealogy

I'm currently busy trying to find out more about my mother's family. I'm currently accesssing www.ancestry.co.uk, www.familysearch.org and the Free BMD website for information. The familysearch site is very good, i've been able to access census information of 1881 which has included some addresses etc which has helped pad out information i already have. Sites such as ancestry.co.uk and it's sister site ancestry.com make me mad as they have the information there but i can have it if i pay a "member's fee" of Â£70.00 per year!!!. This really incenses me and i refuse to pay for information about my own family!.

Has anyone ever tried researching into their family tree? if so, what sites did you use? do you know any sites apart from the ones i've listed that don't charge for the important information? (I've also used the Public Records/ and the Office of National Statistics sites too, so i know about those).

The main bugbear for me is trying to trace my great-grandmother prior to her marriage to my great grandfather. I am getting absolutely nowhere and have zilch on her (i can't even find her on the 1881 census! ) It's like she never existed!.

And finally, would anyone know where i could access the 1891 census without paying a fortune??

Stoo There are two major products that come out of Berkeley: LSD and UNIX. We don't believe this to be a coincidence.

I've been helping my mum to do ours, and we've run into the same problem, you can only get so far then you end up having to pay (In our case it's because of something in canadian law).

Your local records office should be able to point you in the right direction for microfiche copies, but I'm not sure about online, as we've not started doing my mother's side properly.. I'll have a look though
