Seems an awful lot like analysis to me, and a good deal more substantial than most braindead newspaper reviews of the series I've read.

Key word here is substantial. Just reread it to check but still can't find anything much there beyond a host of throw away literary references. It seems to take a scattergun approach rather than concentrating on justifying any one of the (probably legitimate) claims made for the series.

If it had concentrated in-depth on any one approach, I doubt it would have been nearly as sucessful in giving such a broad outline of the subject. As it is, it name-checks many different opinions and invites the reader to examine them more at their own leisure should they so choose. It was a broad overview of the topic, and I don't think it tried to be anything more. On those terms I think it worked well.

And I hope no one actually took the claim to speak "on behalf of the world's interlectuals" remotely seriously! (Well you obviously didn't. ) It was probably inserted by a sub-editor anyhow.
