Ok uninstalling is a pain but if you are running windows xp service pack 1 there is another (easy) solution.

Get yourself another program, like Eudora or the mail client that comes with another browser for example. Install that.

Than hit start --> Set Program Access & Defaults
And make your own custom setting. You can remove access to outlook express and select your new "current" email program to be your mailclient without losing Internet Explorer.

Pretty much what Chambler said. If you install a new e-mail client it will want to become the default client for your environment and will as you about this. Answer to the affirmative and Outlook Express, despite being present on the machine, will be ignored.

I do believe that there is a link between O.E. and Internet Explorer, so trying to get rid of O.E. could be more trouble than it's worth.

As an aside, with a number of technical-types on the boards, why not have a stab at describing the symptoms. Someone might know the answer.

I use Eudora and have no problems with it

Been getting spam again?

I'm sure I found a way (by accident, weirdly enough) of changing e-mail software selection using some IE settings on pre-XP (my PC uses a neanderthal version of Win95, scary huh?) so I'll try and accidentally rediscover it, if taht helps, ok Incandenza?
