I find it very hard to reconcile old comedians with their former self. I felt the same thing with Spike Milligan: I never liked his humour but I could tell, when he was on TV a few years ago, that it was cruel to put him in front of a camera and expect him to perform.
Bob Hope, however, managed to keep quite lively and witty in his later years, if I recall correctly. And he had done so much, and been such a large part of the American "life experience".
A man to be respected, I believe.

Any person / entertainer that manages to reach 100 and remained extremely active and alert for as long as that deserves to be remembered
He was a living legend Not so long ago they were showing some classic films and it was hard to believe then that they were 60 years old!!!
