Why the comparisons, its two very different sports

Most rugby fans wont be ramming the 2003 win down your throat for the next 37 years. Why is that, well because in the rugby we actually stand a good chance of winning something else in the interim.

So what if they are very different sports, the comparison comes from the fact that they were two world cup finals in which England were playing. I found the parallels between the two events interesting and I thought some other people might too.

Most football fans don't ram the 1966 vicory down peoples throats either. The Media do that. and I'd imagine that The Media will now choose to harp on about the Rugby victory quite a lot... Lets face it, thats all items about the England Cricketers are full of at the moment.

I don't understand why there is this level of resentment between fans of the two different sports. Its a national achivement to take pride in and I'm sure that come Euro 2004 there will be plenty of comparisons between this years rugby win and the successes (or lack of them) of next years football team.

I think the comparisons are pretty unfounded. During the Rugby World Cup England supporters have spent a month down under and there have been no related arrests. English football fans can't spend one night in a foriegn country without there being some arrests, even when they play at home theres usually some idiots jailed.

As Koala says I'm *hopeful* that we won't hear about this 'historic' win for the next 30 odd years and how England have some god given right to win all international competitions. English rugby fans just seem to have a little bit more sense than their football loving countrymen.

At the last football World Cup, thousands of England fans spent weeks in Japan with no trouble at all. As they have in locations all over the World. Probably best not to tar tens of thousands of people due to a few hundred morons.

Nothing to do with the 1700 so-called fans who were barred from going to Japan and the massive security operation operated before, during and after all England games then? Didn't see much evidence of that in Austrailia

The boys did good, we (England) won a trophy for the first time since that auspicious footballing year... let us get on with it in the spirit that it was intended. The England Rugby supporters are understandably very proud of the players and no doubt had it been Scotland/Ireland/Wales, we (England) would've been equally pleased (well, i would've been anyway)

Please don't let this thread degenerate into bad feeling and arguments.

I think the distance has a lot to do with that. Why pay all that money to cause trouble in Japan when you can wait a few months for the European qualifiers?!

Secondly, you don't tend to find the same trouble with other sports. The English cricket fans have one of the best reputations in the world!

Thirdly, a lot of the trouble making English football fans aren't actually fans, just people looking for an excuse to cause trouble. A lot of them aren't even English. The biggest suppliers of 'English' football hooligans are Rangers, Cardiff City and the People's Republic of Sheffield United!

At the end of the day, if the English go on about 1966, it's usually in a 'We haven't won the World Cup since 1966 ' way rather than 'Yay, we won the World Cup 37 years ago, aren't we great?' way

And the reason we rub it in with the Scots is because they're usually so disparaging about us (which let's face it, is mainly because of oppression that happened centuries ago. Now who are the ones that are not letting something go? )

By the way, I'm well chuffed that we won.

I think most people are just kinda sick of the '1966' comments. That world cup has nothing to do with it. It's like comparing it to when Bruno won a world title or the rowers won the Olympics.

So big hooray to the rugger boys. Let's let them enjoy their success without banging on about football.

Like I said earlier, don't get me wrong, congrats to them. But what I think Milky is trying to say is that it gets tarnished by the people that go on and on..and on..and on about it. Take my work for example. I've heard about it pretty much 4 or 5 times a day since saturday alone. And that's not gonna stop, but hey-ho it's life.

But you both live and work in our country don't you? People are talking about it 'cos they're English and they're proud. They're not doing it just 'cos you're Scottish. If you lived in France or Brazil and they'd just won something important then you'd have to put up with street parties for days, if not weeks afterwards, and every other car in the street having a big flag being waved out of the window. The celebrations in this country have been pretty understated compared to that.

Millions of people are walking round feeling lifted this week, even if they're not in the slightest bit interested in rugby, or any other sport for that matter. It's just what being World Champions at something does. I think maybe you underestimate just what it means to the people of this country.

We live in a country where it's almost frowned upon to be proud of where you come from, so it's nice to be able to make the most of it for once

What the hell, I might as well get involved in this one...

I'm glad we won. I like rugby even less than I like football. I didn't watch a single game of the World Cup, but I'm still quite proud that England won.

I also seem to have gotten off pretty lightly from hearing people talk about it. I first found out we'd won from this thread when I logged on Saturday afternoon. And in total I've only heard two people mention it. One was my dad rolling his eyes at me (over the phone) for not watching it, and the other was my boss (a Kiwi) saying how happy he was that we'd won.

As for rugby fans and non-England fans getting annoyed with mentions of and comparisons with the Football World Cup, I notice that the first person to bring it up in this thread was a Scotsman...

I can totally see why the English would be proud. Hell the last time Scotland won anything was when Gavin Hastings was captain! lol. I *can* on the otherhand say that some people (Nobody here obviously) are saying it because I'm Scottish. I should know judging by the micktakes. You get people that support the other hom nations, and you get others that just gloat about it. simple as that. I was full of admiration for the guy in the Nos Pre-Meet pub last week that was cheering on Scotland. Good on him I say! Saying that though, I still here about Gazzas goal in Euro '96!

I still watched the game that England played against Italy to qualify for World Cup '98 (I think it was that anyway) and I truly hoped they would get through.

If you lived in Italy or Brazil you might (although in Brazil you'd hear them banging on about winning it five times ). The reason you hear the English banging on about it is because you come from a country that gets our telly, not because the English do it more than anyone else. If you're really that sick of it then what are you doing looking, let alone posting, in this thread. It's quite obvious from the title what it's about

If you want to see a country where the people bang on relentlessly about sporting success, go live in Australia for a month. They never stop!

And while we're on the subject, has there been a World Cup involving Scotland since 1978 where the Scottish haven't dug up footage of Archie Gemmill's goal against Holland?

Well if the two countries weren't seperate then we wouldn't be having this argument in the first place would we?

Anyway, I'm going to bed, cos I've probably been a bit harsher than I meant to be. But hey, I'm feeling quite patriotic at the moment and no one's going to take that away from me. Not for a few days anyway

Oh sweet lord yes. I know Australians who still cannot accept with good grace that they lost. And they're not slow to make a point that compratively England still lag behind them sport-wise.

If the Scots had done all the deporting instead of us you'd have it 10x worse than you do now,less than 3 days after the final

If people are 'still banging on about it' in a few months time I could see the justification for moaning but jeez give me a break.
