Looks like George Galloway's libel action has just got its star witness back.
"We got him!"
As so with some truly Bushite worthy rhetoric care of Iraqi governor Paul Bremner, everything ends?
No, of course it doesn't, but it's undeniably a major coup for the "coalition of the willing". Whether their scalp will bring an end, or even substantial reduction, of the daily killing of their troops remains to be seen, as many of the resistance like the old despot about as much as I do. No doubt this will be used by America and Britain as the clincher on their victory, but that won't come until ever foreign soldier has left Iraqi soil, and US companies have stopped feeling like emaciated jackals on the carrion they've reduced Iraqi to. Psychologically, the impact is nigh on unfathomable, but we shouldn't let it be used to blind us to the continuing reality of an illegal and immoral military occupation.
As for the aged tyrant, he should be tried in an open court, as Tony Blair has already claimed will happen in Iraq itself. The only way this will be halfway effective is if it's a genuine and fair trial, without a foregone death penalty waiting to martyr the accused. But since the US has shunned the international criminal court, and tops the league for judicial murder, it's hard to see how they're going to go about this.
So I'm glad the Iraqi people are spared the spectre of the dictator's return, but am fearful of how the Bush administration will exploit this propagandist's manna from Damascus.
