Huntley found Guilty of Murder
Sketchy details as yet, but according to the breaking news section on the front page of Guardian Unlimited Ian Huntley has been found guilty of the murder of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman.
Maxine Carr has been found guilty of Perverting the Course of Justice, but has been cleared of two counts of Assisting an Offender.

Apparently he was reported to police for things like this 10 times. How the hell does someone like that get a job as a school caretaker??? And to think that you actually have people complaining about checks being done!!!

Well at least justice has finally prevailed. I had followed the trial to a point and figured him as guilty as hell. I just wondered what took the jury so long to come to the conclusion. The fact that other issues have been revealed underlines that it was murder rather than manslaughter.

Well thank heavens this whole wretched affair has come to an end. Here's hoping the media (yes, all of it) can finally let things rest now.
I'm very uneasy about Maxine Carr's sentance though. It's accepted she didn't conspire or in all likelihood know about the crimes, and if that's the case, all she did was lie to protect someone she loved and assumed innocent. The police have fitted people up before and will do again: instinctively, you're going to stick up for someone if you assume them innocent. Anyone would have done the same, and if she had been married to Huntley, she could not have been forced to testify against him. Justice is blind, at times rather to much for my liking.
Huntley will at least be placed where he can do no farther harm, and that's the most that can reasonably be done.

Posted: 17:44 Dec 17 2003 Most opinion round here (and I concur) says that they'll have taken all this time mainly on Maxine Carr's role into the affair, btw. They won't have taken that long on Huntley's conviction; but hers' wasn't so cut-and-dried...

Also, juries can return verdicts on any counts at any stage, if they are sent for. They don't have to wait until they've reached verdicts on all the counts.
What appears to have taken so long is that one juror didn't agree with the other twelve. Eventually, the judge decided the time had come to give them a majority verdict direction and, one assumes, they probably came back quite quickly after that.

Well, Huntley actually said, "the last friendly face the girls spoke to". He may not have been quite so friendly while he was suffocating them, but then, they wouldn't have been quite so talkative.

Funny thing about his past is though that as far as I've seen it he was never actaully convicted for any of these (more serious) crimes. He was linked to a lot of different crimes in the past involving minors but they never made it stick (or the charges where dropped in the end).

And if they don't make it stick or the charges are dropped you haven't been found guilty. And as you are innocent until proven otherwise....... this information in the current system wouldn't be part of the police screening. Although they know they brought him in connection with loads of stuff they can't give use that information in the police screening procedures.
And before everyone start crying but they should allow them to use this information etc etc etc.... that would mean that someone that is found not guilty (therefor by law innocent) should pay for false alligation against his / her name all her life because they wouldn't be able to get a job anywhere (as where is smoke.....)
That this worked out wrong in this particular case doesn't mean that "everyone that is found not guilty" has to be punished for that all their life.
But this was a pretty clear case and I'm glad that this guy is now put behind bars. Means that after all this time can finally let this start to rest and get to peace with it. Although I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't survive too long in prison as doing something like this to children really makes him the lowest form of life there. And besides that of course he might have to think about buying some soaps on a rope
I think that the woman only got such a high sentance for what she has done because this is such a high profile case as you see this "all the time" people standing up for each other and in a lot of the cases nothing is done about it at all (atleast not to this extend). I don't know that the maximum penalty is for what she did but I guess thats give or take what she got out of it!

Makes you sick, if he was investigated all those times for each case then why didn;t any of the policemen who carried them out realise who he was when they were first looking for the girls, maybe then it could have ended quicker and the families wouldn't still be going through hell.
I think her sentance is far too weak and i really hope they both get whats coming to them in prision.
