Maxine Carr was not charged with killing the girls and was acquited of having anything to do with the murders. You may think she was niave and foolish in not recognising that her boyfriend was hiding something, but you seem to be implying that she deserves to die for this??

Contrary to the impression that media reports may have given, Maxine Carr is not the new Myra Hindley.

They were talking on Radio 4 yesterday about how Carr might have to have plastic surgery, or go abroad. Not the kind of desperate remedies usually associated with someone sentenced to three and a half years. Have people gone totally bonkers? Silly question, I suppose. Some people are bonkers all of the time...

On this subject, the trial's close prompted another discussion about 'evil' on The Moral Maze last Wednesday (repeated again this evening at 10:15). Centering on Saddam Hussein, but also featuring Huntley. Worth listening to just for the moment when Melanie Phillips tries to float yet another tautological argument, and it just sort of sinks gently...

The thing with Carr is that a lot of people don't believe her story and so she is going to be a target for vigilantes. Naturally the law can not allow this and they obviously fear revenge attacks so they have to give alternative safe options for her.

Carr's media crucifixion has definitely got me questioning whether certain cases should be subject to anonymity. Justice has to be seen done, but there's a fine line between that and throwing someone to the mob. Or maybe sections of the press need regulating to within an inch of their whisky-laced eyeballs in reporting this sort of thing. It's cases like this that reinforce my view that incitement to violence is a very real and very dangerous crime against the person.

What's for sure is that Carr's current punishment isn't doing anyone the least bit of good.

Im sorry, i must have typed in invisible ink, strangly enough i didnt say she should die for it. If i even slightly thought she was the next Myra Hindley id be wanting her to get bit more than a good kicking in prison. If she even had the slightly idea that he was involved in the murders then she should have gone to the police and not lied for him. Its makes her as sick as he is. I understand she was probably scared but if i thought that my boyfriend had killed or even tried anything with two little girls, id be compaining to get him sent down.

So dont try and tell me what i think.

I know you didn't say she should die. That's why I used 'implied" and you certainly seemed to imply that some harm should be done to her (and have now confirmed that this is what you meant).

Sorry, but what Maxine Carr did does not make her "as sick as he is". What a ludicrous thing to say. Saying that you would turn in your boyfriend if you thought he had committed murder is not really the point. What would you do if you thought he hadn't been involved in a murder, but it was likely that the police might consider him a suspect. Might you be tempted to tell a lie to protect him? We can all look at the case, and wonder why Maxine Carr would have been with such a man and why she was not more suspicious of Huntley's behaviour (although there are plenty of clues in what has come out about her background), but trying to give her crime equivalence to his is ridiculous and diminishes what he has done.

Very good point. Why is Maxine Carr in prison, and what do we gain from this? She has been revealed as someone who suffered a traumatic childhood and clearly still has problems, including long term anorexia. Prison certainly won't do her any good. Does it benefit society? Not really, no-one is being 'protected' from her, will anyone be detered from doing what she did? Given that her 'crimes' seem to mainly be a lack of judgement?

How do you know she wasnt involved? You can't prove she wasn't and i cant prove she was so why can;t you just let other people have their views?

If the courts decided that she wasn't involved, then you have to take that and give her the benefit of the doubt.

Theres alot of people have have been wrongly convicted or have gotten away with things to later be charged so i dont have to believe anything. Its my view, i have no problem with others views so thats all fine.

I completely agree its the jury who saw all the evidence not the average joe following the story on the tv or the newspapers (the daily express was comparing Ian Huntley with Saddam Hussien yesterday ), these people had to make the decision and I respect them having to make it in the media frenzy that was happening.

Quite. The jury, who had all the relevent evidence before them, found her innocent of assisting an offender, and without cast iron proof before me, I go with their verdict and the most fundamental rule of any civlised system of law, innocent until proved guilty. We all have our suspicions, but I sure as anything don't wish harm against people because of them.
