Goodbye Mark & Lard...

So, as I'm sure at least some of you know, Mark & Lard did their last ever show on Radio 1 this Friday just gone. So I thought I'd create a thread to commemorate this occasion. I know it's a bit late, but hey, it is me doing it...

Now, I know that there's plenty of people out there who coun't give a toss about it, but Mark & Lard have been a part of my life (to some extent) since I was at school, so the fact that they're now no more is quite sad.

I remember listening to 'Bird or Bloke' as I drove to school. I remember, before I started listening to them, one of my friends used to always quote bits to me at random. I remember being at work and hearing them giving a 'Biggedy Biggedy Bong to everyone going to see Iron Maiden tonight' on the day I was, well, going to see Iron Maiden!

The last show was very, very cool. (If you missed it you can hear it all (apart from the last 5 minutes

) here) It was emotional and poigniant whilst still managing to be very upbeat and funny. There were some great tributes from various people. Even Travis impressed me with their 'Ode to Mark and Lard'. And Coldplay came up with a new, and I think definitive version of Candle in the Wind!

And at the end, they did 'half a catchphrase' and then "forgot" to hand over to Sara Cox in London so there was a few minutes of dead air followed by the emergency DAT kicking in!

Anyhoo, I'm babbling on, and I'm probably the only person on here who liked them and this thread's probably gonna get filled up with "They were pants, glad they're gone!" replies, but hey-ho...

So, to Messrs Radcliffe and Riley, wherever they are right now, I'd like to say COD FISH BATTERED BALLS!!

Ah yes, the Mighty Horse!

And it was great to hear the one-time-only Shirehorses reunion on the final show. That was cool! And I do count myself lucky and treasure the memories from the twice I got to see them perform live.

Blimey, I haven't listened to 'em in ages; got out of it 'cos of the slight problem of school then college timetables insisting I had to be in all day (not to mention stubborn git teachers who seriously couldn't understand the importance of public service radio being one of the cornerstones of a nutritious education

), so I usually only got to listen in the holidays, and now they're gone!

Come to think of it, why are they gone?

Well, if I can quote a verse from Coldplay's Candle in the Wind:

Um, or I could just say that it's Edith Bowman and Colin Whatsisface that are taking over.

I remember them once doing a 'parody'

of that song Horny that was out years and years ago, and turning it into such a bleeped-out mess I couldn't stop laughing

It makes sense to me

I don't really listen to the radio at all now though so *shrug*

I liked Mark and Lard, but have barely listened for ages as i can't stick the music on radio 1. Their late evening show was the sound of the sixth form for me, and i loved it to bits.

In my old age the only radio station i listen to regularly is radio 4, but i may have to try Radcliffe when he takes over the late evening slot on radio 2 sometime soon, just to see if it is like the old days in any way

I got out of the habit of listening to them on the afternoon shift, as they weren't allowed to be as funny or as musically exciting as they were on the Graveyard Slot. Where else on radio one would you get poetry (Simon Armitage writing on the green kitten; Ian McMillan generally being Barnsley-brilliant), book reviews (Will Self), cutting edge brilliant music you couldn't get anywhere else, and erudite, off-the-wall humour. I actually cried when they left the evening slot, and made my little self a tape of the last week highlights.

So, farewell then, Mark and Lard.

JtB If someone gives you freedom it is not freedom, freedom is something you take for yourself.

I hadn't listened to them in while but have fond memories of Slim and Shady the squirrels and britney bunny, I usually enjoyed their show. I just kept forgetting to turn the radio station over as all the over Dj's on their are rubbish and up their own rears as Mark and Lard frequently pointed out.

well...i didn't mind em really, cant say i ever tned in specifically to catch their show...but i never minded listening when it was on....
although my boyfriend has tried to beat any liking i had for them out of me, he hates them very much! heh, he's *very* pleased to see the back of them!

) they did years ago, I was in hysterics, I remember my Dad saying he probably would've been too if he'd been able to hear any of it over the maniacal laughter...

Thanks to the title of this thread, I can't help but think of Dead Ringers and imagining Elton John has been employed to sing a heartfelt lament in their honour...

But that's by the by.

Lard, er I mean Marc Riley's new show 'Rocketscience' started at the weekend! Saturdays, 2-5pm, on 6Music.

It wasn't a bad first show by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, it was quite good, but it did sound odd to hear him talking and not have Mark Radcliffe joining in. Some of the music was great, some drivel, and some I'd not heard before. He sounded quite nervous too. Although I'm sure once he finds his feet and relaxes a bit it'll become a cracking weekend listen.

Edith and Colin are a shoddy replacement for the great Mark and Lard, however I am looking forward to hearing Radcliffe on Radio 2... must make an effort to have a listen at some point

Well I never watched Dead Ringers so I don't get the connection there, but the Elton John thing was deliberate. The thread title is the opening line to Coldplay's version of Candle in the Wind that they recorded for the final show.

And I'd like to say "D'oh!" for having missed Marc's new show though. I'll try and catch it at some point. And I'll also try and remember to catch Mark's show when it starts.
