I'm not really sure what to say. I don't ever remember being taught *anything* other than straight intercourse from either school/parents. The day Sam or Billy come home from school and want to know what a 'blow job' is the day I'll be stuck for words. They know the technical side of how babies are made (even 'tho B still insists that the stork brings babies ) but they don't know the emotional side of things.

As for it preventing intercourse, from my experience it's just a lead up to it. You can't stop at 1/2 a job and even if that 1/2 of the job is complete I'd still like a bit extra thank you very much. I shall stop now

I had Moral education with one of our teachers who was honest with everything and quite in your face and it was her who really taught us everything. It wasnt just this is how people have sex, it makes babies the end, she showed us all forms of contraception, taught us about abortion and teen pregnancy. That was much more effective than anything we got taught before that or in biology.

my dad threatened to lock me up when I turned 16, that was when I was 8 so I never really got why, it only clicked recently lol!

If you possibly can, read George Monbiot's comment in today's Guardian about the Silver Ring Thing - it's both hilarious and contains all the relevant facts about why such campaigns are an awful idea. Unfortunately, I can't find an online version.

The problem is getting people to use them. If you'd bothered to look beyond the 'our children are being taught about oral sex!' tabloid alarmist attitude, you'd have read that the emphasis of the program in on being open about sex - not being too embarrased to buy or insist upon the use of condoms. Hence why there is also discussion of oral sex, and homosexual sex. It also emphasises being open and honest with your partner.

It is a comprehensive program addressing both the physical and emotional aspects of sex, and it works. I really can't think of anything else to ask for in a sex ed program.

Sorry, is the 'you' me or a general 'you'? If it is me then I didn't realise I came across as having a tabloid alarmist attitude. Infact I never commented on it being either good or a bad thing

I know my children will know that they *have* to use condoms and they won't have to be embarrased to buy them. Hell, I'll even buy them for them.

And what sort of age are they discussing this? (did I miss it in the report(s)? ) I certainly wouldn't want my pre-teen to know *every* aspect of sex. My 7yr old knows that 'men can love other men (and woman/woman too) like mummy loves daddy' but that's all he needs to know right now.

These aren't exactly 'oral sex lessons' - kids would just be encouraged to try out other stuff rather than sex. Which is fair enough and would certainly work better than teaching abstinance which just leaves people ignorant (and pregnant). But I doubt teenage pregnancy would be lowered by this because teenagers stop having sex altogether, they'll just be better educated in general and use protection!

Personally I think there is nothing wrong with properly educating kids on the multiple angles of sexual relations. As be honest for most people sex is just as much a part of life as math etc... so kids should be informed. Even young kids should be tought only on a level and a way appropriate to their age.

Although I think sex shouldn´t be something (in any way of form) that should be encouraged to teens. Talking about sex and not making it a taboo is of course a totally different subject and actually might be a good way towards a ¨solution¨.

But keep in mind that kids are ´maturing´ faster and faster.... current studies show that over the last 70 years the average age on which girls start having their period has been kicked back two years.

For western girls this means that they start their puberty at the age of give or take 10 and have their first period around 12...

They might be physically ¨ready¨ for it......... but I don´t think that the mental ageing process speeded up at the same rate...

I realise that I haven't considered the econimics of this and that my educational expierence has been through the Private system that sees sex as something best not discussed, but wouldn't it be better to make protection free? Government issue condoms?

I didn't see my first condom till I was 16!!! The education system does fail a lot of people in this country because people don't wanna talk about it.

I think free protection for all should be the governments policy, and have it available in places BESIDES sexual health clinics (mainly cos I don't know where m closest one is. They don't seem keen to put up sign posts to find these places!)

I realise this may be a very sheltered view, but if the government want to reduce teenage pregnancies, maybe they should consider slightly more straightforward methods....

I'm not sure that price is really a barrier (no pun, no pun!) to condom use, and if it's not, while it would be nice, I don't think there'd be sufficient justification for country-wide free condoms. On the other hand, birth control pills are completely free, so perhaps it's not so far-fetched, though I don't know how the price would compare.

Well they could always increase the price on their novelty types to make up profits. You can have standard for free, and anything else will cost you.

A friend of mine did suggest a government sponsered sterilisation programme.....
