Perhaps it is sad that Nic Brendan is alcoholic and has had to enter rehab to help him get over it, but it's certainly not a stars-only phenomenon.

But where it does concern stars, i don't think that sort of private affair is anyone else's business. I tend to think people's obsession with knowing the affairs of actors (and other celebs) and thinking of them as if they were friends or something is a tad on the wrong side of healthy.

b) Normally, I would agree with a star's private life being exactly that, private. But Nic Brendon has purposefully made this news public, on his own website no less, in an attempt, I would guess, to let his fans know what's happening with him. At least it takes the wind out of the sails of anyone wishing to spread rumours about him.

So, while I appreciate your viewpoint, this thread wasn't intended to be the place to start a discussion about whether a celebrity's affairs should be made public. It was just passing on some information that people on T21 (a large proportion of whom are Buffy fans) would be interested in. Perhaps you could keep any side issues for another thread. Thank you.

I agree Brendon is most likely announcing it himself because if he didn't the obsessed fans would most likely spread the rumour themselves and his name would get trashed. So the man has to air his dirty laundry before someone else does it. That's a bit sad.

As for keeping 'side issues' for another threads, chatting about indirect, but still relevant material and issues has never been frowned upon before on Tangent21 before to my knowledge and i'm sure if i wanted to i could find many instances to give examples of. I notice you're no longer staff (which is surprising, because your post sounded very 'staff'), so if the real staff thought i shouldn't have posted it, i'm sure they'd have told me.

Incidentally, i wish Brendon all the best... and stuff.

I really don't think anyone's trying to hijack your thread. Maff's posts are all polite and relevant. You're of course free to delete the thread (and presumably maff will start another one) but it's not really in the spirit of things is it?

Let's get this back to Nick Brendon. He's a real pro who entertained me for years as Xander in Buffy, and I can only hope all goes well for him.

Thanks to Whistler for posting this up. I didn't make it to the Fusion convention that Nick attended this month, but I understand he was very forthcoming about his problems (I'm sure anyone who attended will correct me if that is wrong)

Everyone has their own personal demons to bear in life, and not many are brave enough to be able to stand up and say "I've done wrong and need support" - not too different to what one member Phoenix-Aeon has done on a thread here this week

If Nick Brendon feels it is better to admit things to his fan base and to look for strength from their knowing (because they can't give support personally - it's just the knowing someone else knows that counts really) then good luck to him.

If anything he says publically subconsciously helps a "fan" get help then surely it's a good thing to. I think many fans of actors have decent non-obsessive heads on their shoulders. If Nick wants to offer information it is great to see him making a step in the right direction, I disagree with when the paparazzi go "digging for dirt" when people are entitled to a private life if they aren't doing anyone else harm.

Oh yeah, definitely, there are huge numbers of fans, (several of them here on T21 ) that are fans of individual actors without being scarily obsessive, and if that's what people are into, that's cool. I certainly didn't mean what i said to sound dismissive of people who are.

However, i tend to think anything beyond what goes on in their professional career is something that should stay to themselves. If Nic Brendon wants to give out info and let people know what's going on though, fair enough. Mine is one of many opinions

All I can say is good luck to him and I can fully undetrstand the need to go public. I do hope he makes it, knowing that you've kicked the habit is one of the greatest feelings in the world.

i think he's done the right thing..he's been honest about his problem(when many alcoholics are in denial)which is the first step of many to recoveryit may also help him to know that by being honest others will gain some sort of courage to admit if they have their own probs!!
Those in the public eye ARE entitled to privacy, but as said earlier...if Nic didn't say it someone else would've, this way he controls wahts said and how

Firstly, fantastic to see you here (I don't care what topic I'm in when an "old timer" breezes past )

I kinda know what you are trying to say, and whilst I don't think anyone can put a timing on *it*, there seems to be a lot of questioning or having to reason on what people post. Everyone has an element of bitchy/sarcy, but it depends how and when it's appropriate to use it and also comes back to the old problem of "lack of tone" in posts where something can be misinterpreted.
