apendix free? ...

as some of you know i was taken into hopidal last saturday after suffring chest and stomach pains and after a lot of tests it turn out it was apendicitus - now i always related apendicitus with teenagers and children [as whenever i knew someone who had it it was while i was still at school] so i was a bit taken by surprise and quite a few people i know have been through it, so i was just wondering
*who here has had the blighter out and how old were you when it happened?
*how long til you were better?
*what did you do to while away the days in bed?
*did you "hate your life" because it stopped you from going somewhere or doing something? (think that what kids screamed when they werent allowed to do anything lol)

they stapled me up and when i saw it i was fascinated by it rather then repulsed/freaked out but im dreading the time they have to come out as they have given me special scissor plier type thing and it really makes the imagination go nuts LOL.

I got appendicitis 2 days after Christmas the year i was 10. This meant we were up seeing family in Edinburgh at the time and i got lots of visitors

Was out of hospital after 5 days (one more than expected, for an infection i got in the wound :rolleyes

. I have no idea what i did in the 3/4 weeks until i was better, other than revel in the time i got off school. These things are much less fun once you are older.

I had it about 6 years ago. Went in on a Tuesday morning and had it whipped out by Tuesday night, it was supposedly close to bursting

Was in hospital for a further 2 days, got out on the Friday morning. Had to walk with a crutch for the first 4 days as it was painful to put any weight on that side of my body. Was about 2 weeks healing up and I spent it at my mum's house watching tv and videos.

I've not had mine out. Yet. But sometimes I do have some nasty gut pains and start to wonder... but then they never last more than 30 seconds then disappear for months... *shrug*

Taz Extra medication for all - Pilz-e

I had mine out when I was 16.
It came just in time to get me outta my physics GCSE with a solid past (not my best subject, so was mega chuffed

)
I had bright blue stitches & now have a lovely pink scar to show for it.
I think I just slept a lot & watched TV for a week after I was out, but as it was time away from school I wasn't really bothered.

I can't remember how old I was.... erm around 21 or so I think.

Had pains on and off for a while then at work one day I was in agony - went to see the work doctor who diagnosed appendicitus, went straight to hospital. They sent me home the next day as I settled in the night. Well of course I would, they gave me painkillers

The next evening I was in so much pain again, called the doc out who got an ambulance to take me to another hospital where they whipped it out the next day. It was close to bursting

Took about 2-3 weeks to recover and a further 2-3 weeks to get full mobility back again.

I had nice disolving stitches and some of the sticky ones - are they called butterfly stitches

Nice neat scar as well - keeps my C-Section scar company

The one thing that really made me mad was the fact I couldn't go clubbing for a couple of weeks

i am considering putting the staples up on eBay to see what sick mofos would actually bid on them LOL hey if someone can get Â£20 for selling nothing (literally) there's gotta be some nutcase out there who wants these

What is the appendix used for?

For years the appendix was thought to have no physiological function at all. However, it is now known to play an important role in the foetus and young adults.

During the 11th week of foetal development endocrine cells appear in the appendix. These cells have been shown to produce peptide hormones that control various biological mechanisms.

Amongst young adults, the appendix is now thought to be involved primarily in immune functions. It has been shown that the appendix contains lymphatic tissue which assists with the maturation of B lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell) and in the production of antibodies. The function of the appendix appears to be to expose white blood cells to the wide variety of antigens (foreign substances) present in the gastrointestinal tract promoting local immunity against microbes and viruses.

Scientists also think that these local immune reactions have some relationship with inflammatory bowel diseases and this possibility is currently under investigation.

what I wanna know id why the body rejects it? (at least that's what im told what appendicitus is the body rejecting it) and if that IS what the body is doing why is that the most frequently rejected organ [along with tonsilitus] and not something more obscure like "im sorry sir we're going to have to operate it seems your body has rejected its left nipple/pinky/tounge/your lower intestine etc"

I'm guessing here, but due to the fact that Stoo's definition thing says that the appendix is involved in immune functions, that one of these functions goes wrong which in turn leads the body to think that the appendix is a foreign object/disease which must be purged which is why it is then rejected. Not entirley sure what tonsils do but if they have an immune function/use then I'm guessing thats what happens there as well. Things like your left nipple/pinky/tounge/your lower intestine don't have an immune function to go wrong which is why they aren't then rejected.

I'm sure one of the more medical people on here will come up with a better reason though and I'm probably way off

Ok I'm bored so here's what it's all about from the NHS Direct Website

The appendix is a part of the bowel that no longer has any useful function in humans. It is about 3 inches long and consists of a very narrow sack attached to the first part of the large intestine called the caecum, found in the lower right of the abdomen.

Appendicitis is a condition in which the appendix becomes inflamed for reasons that are not fully understood. It most commonly occurs in adolescents and young adults, but can occur rarely at any other age.

Causes:

Inflammation usually starts when there is a blockage at the top of the appendix for some reason, so that germs and discharges can't get out into the caecum. The blockage may be by a hard lump of faeces, a plug of mucus or a swallowed foreign body.

The resulting swelling may cause the blood supply to the appendix to be cut off so that severe inflammation and infection may occur. If the walls of the appendix then break down, the appendix may rupture (perforate) and release the infection into the abdomen.

Lioness A stranger is simply a friend you haven't met yet.

I was about 12 or 13 when mine was removed. I woke up feeling a bit sick one morning and went to being bent double in pain, throwing up and shaking fits. Despite of all this the doctor still thought I just had a water infection.

Luckily the student doctor at the hospital had more sense and got me straight down to theatre to have it removed otherwise I'm be one dead kitty as the damn thing had burst.
