The boys finally come good (even if they let in that 2nd goal from Croatia waaaay too easy)
OK so I missed the first half being at work, but the second half I screamed very unladylike at the screen.
Still think mini-shrek is the better player, he runs faster than the old chaps. Although, *Rich's* goal was one to be pleased with.
Now if only our defence could remember what and who they are supposed to be defending
Shame the French won their match - I'm never going to hear the last of them topping the group table

D'ya reckon? I don't know much about football, so maybe I'm wrong here, but that seemed like a damn good goal to me and not one that we should be ashamed of letting in. It came right out of nowhere. It even took the Croatian fans a few seconds to realise there'd been a goal before they started cheering. David James seemed to play pretty damn well all game, and the fact that he hardly had time to even move suggests that there wasn't much anyone could have done to stop it.

I'm curious whether or not anyone thinks England can win the tournament?
Looking back over the group games I'd say the following..
England Vs France
The first half was dominated by England who looked the far more dangerous team and went in at half time leading with a well deserved and well taken goal. However France stepped up a couple of gears and England were on the back foot for the second half. Zidane's goal was stunning and a draw would have been a fair result. Losing the penalty was a combination of errors which cost England the game. Beckhams missed penalty was also pivotal as if he'd scored that I doubt the French would have been able to come-back. It was easily the worst penalty I've seen for a while though, very badly placed.
England Vs Switzerland
You would expect England to beat the Swiss but they seemed to struggle. Rooney's goal was good but until Switzerland lost a man England couldn't capatilise on their possesion. If the Swiss hadn't lost a man I'm pretty sure the game would have finished 1-0.
England Vs Croatia
Where to start. Croatia's goal was from a needless free-kick. Rooney's strike was easily goal of the tournament so far, just the way he was demanding the ball and making space makes him a dream to watch. Scholes' goal was the result of continued English pressure and the fact that the Croat keeper isn't that great(he was their 2nd choice). Rooney's second goal was again the result of some great play but the Croat's second goal again came from a needless free-kick. Lampards goal was well worked but again had a lot to do with how bad the keeper is.
So onto Lisbon on Thursday night and the host nation. Portugal are a far better team than Croatia or Switzerland although they probably aren't as good as France. Portugal have struggled to get going in this tournament although they played well against Spain. Will England beat them? To me it's hard to say.
Rooney is on fire and looks dangerous whenever he has the ball, Portugal don't have the greatest centrebacks so Rooney and Owen should have a pace advantage over them meaning they can get behind the defence for a few chances. Beckham is of course dangerous at set-peices which gives them some more chances. Portugal are also dangerous at set-peices and Englands defence has looked very weak when it comes to set-peices(all their goals conceded have been free-kicks or a penalty) Ronaldo seems to be getting better as the tournament progresses and it'll be interesting to see him up against Ashley Cole. There will also be a huge amount of passion in the Portugese squad to win the tournament at home. However I'm going to say 3-2 to England.

My Chelsea boys are gonna save the day!
Frankie is playing the best ever, Roony is on a roll, Owen is playing pants, Becks needs a kick up the butt (not nicky) I cant get over how well Gary Nevell is playing, he's zooming about all over the place.
Scolesy is gonna be off off and away as long as he keeps calm, Sol is the best defender in the world and Ashley Cole is a little dynimite given the chance. As long as Terrys legs stays ok (was abit hurt yesterday) our defending should be good...if not we have Ledley (the vicor had a lisp) King who is fresh blood and is really playing hard.
Then we have David James...but theres no one else so we'll have to sick with him

Got no problems with the line up although I believe Alan Smith should have been included, I think Heskey is pure crap and Darius Vassell is good, but yet to prove his England might. Also, not missing Rio Arrogant-Arse Ferdinand, one bit!

Smith is a good player but he is only 23 so he's one for the future, he's got a very dodgy temprament as well and you don't want players getting sent off in a tournament like this. Heskey is severley lacking confidence, he's taken some beating in the press. If he was played in the correct position he'd be a revelation. That won't happen now though. I don't rate Vassell at all.

I'd have to say you definately are missing Ferdinand though. The England defence looks superbly shaky and you're leaking a lot of goals at set pieces. Ferdinand is one of the best defenders in the world and his presence would steady the defence. If he was playing I think England would have a far better chance of winning the tournament.

I haven't enjoyed a game as much since watching the mighty Brighton get promoted at the Millenium Stadium!
I think England can go on and win it but will have to defend a hell of a lot better at set pieces. Portugal will be hard to play because they are at home but they haven't looked great so far (in fact no-one has looked great in all their games)

Thing about Owen is he's been playing pants for a while now but everyone still thinks he's wonderful, he needs to stop focusing on his asda adverts and get his head back in the game. Gerrard's a little star though, he makes some mistakes but he'll run his ass off for the team! Rooneys fantastic at the moment though, let's just hope it doesn't go to his head! x

I thought last night was actually the best game I've seen Owen play for a while. Didn't score, but his movement was very good, he creates some of the space that Rooney uses.
Posted: 21:08 Jun 22 2004 Have you been watching the same player?? Who set up both of Rooney's goals against Croatia and also had a hand in the Scholes goal? He's creating the space for Rooney to work in and his runs cause defences a lot of problems. He's not a prolific goal scorer which is his only downfall. I think he needs a goal just to get his scoring boots working in this tourny.
