I'm a massive Liverpool fan! If i tried to support anyone else my Dad would disown me lol, our house is like a mini LFC museum and he's on the fan jury thing in the Echo and all kinds! Hopefuly Benitez can come in and inject a bit of life and drive back into the team, i volunteer to kick Michael Owen up the backside anyway! Quite looking forward to the new season to see how he does! xx

i've not lived there. but my family are from there and moved to wales....

also i dont see why location has any baring on the team you support (mainly as i've had this argument every week since i was like 8). if your family support them it is kinda drummed into that you should aswell, i'm sure everyone here has had a similar sort of experience.

..also how many people actually support their local teams..and by local i mean closet one in any regonised league, not just the biggest closet one...not many do i know that. here in sunderland and etc the closet team is south shields utd...or gateshead if you live in the newcastle/gateshead area...but no bugger supports them! kinda hypocritcal i reckons...anyway rant over

also manchester uni done a study last year and found that its about 50 50 on the population of manchester that support either city or utd

No worries, I was just curious

But to answer your question, I do actually support my closest Football League/Premiership club, which is Southampton. I was actually born in Southampton, too.

My closest club is actually Eastleigh FC, a non league club, as I actually live in Eastleigh. But I still have a Southampton post code.

I take your point that if your family support a team then the children tend to as well. But what always gets my goat is kids supporting teams just because they are big and just because they always win.

If you don't have any external influences, such as your family, then I would always hope that people would support a team, or teams, local to them. Indeed, I would always hope that Eastleigh do well, it's just that Southampton are more prominent locally for obvious reasons. In towns/cities which don't have Football League or Premiership teams, I would hope that locals would get behind and support their non-league club.

tis ok. i know what you mean though. i've supported man utd even when we werent great, when i was a kid in the 80's. but at least you understand. alot of people are still..well you should support your local anyway glory fan blah blah blah! lol

saying that i do stil lgo and watch newcastle and sunderland play too

So United weren't great in the 80's? They still won the FA cup twice so it still seems like glory hunting to me.

I'm not having a go at you personally but I do hate it when people think football begins and ends in the top division and don't support their local teams or at least a team that their family has connections to. All these Man Utd fans that have no idea where Manchester is annoy the hell out of me.

I get accused of glory hunting sometimes since Wolves aren't entirely local to me (nearest 'big' team to me would be Birmingham or Villa... ) nor does anyone else in my family support them.

But since I started back when we were down in the old Div 4 I think I can be excuse glory hunting

Funnily enough I was thinking earlier how I felt sorry for Wolves and Fulham fans that were accused of Glory hunting but had been watching them since they were in the bottom league. I remember when Fulham played their first game in the Prmier league after years in the lower leagues. There was a sell out crowd and the ones who had been going all along started a chant to the rest of the fans "Where were you when we were s**t!"

then again all kids at a young age tend to support the 'best team' of the time, when i was young it was liverpool, then the 90's man utd, and now i.e loads of little kids up in sunderland wearing arsenal or chelsea kits.

Man United were rubbish in the 80s. Even Villa managed to win the league once

I was quite fortunate, because when I was growing up the two nearest clubs to where I lived were also the two most successful clubs in the country at the time

Still managed to beat us (Brighton) 4-0 in Cup final replay! Mind you I'd settle for an FA cup final now. Ho Hum relegation campaign starts tomorrow.
