Schoolbag Causing Neckache!!

My schoolbag appears to be causing horrible problems with my neck at the moment

My school doesn't have lockers so I have to carry an awful lot of books (and often trainers and PE Kit) around on my back the whole day. Then when I have to walk home some days it makes it even worse as I'm putting strain on my neck and shoulders for 40-50 minutes of walking.

I went to town with friends after school today and had to carry all my books and a change of clothes all the way round town, then walking home from the bus stop.

By the time I kept getting sharp pains every time I moved my neck, and it took 2 hours (and a hot bath) before they died down (the back of my neck is still sore even now).

I don't see how I can get around it because I need my books.

Anyone else having probs too? Maybe worth seeing a doc about this?

A school bag can get heavy, agreed. I've seen some of the stuff Abby puts in hers, but not to this extent I wouldn't have thought. It almost sounds like there's another underlying problem there.

Either that, or start carrying it rather than wearing it

I used to do a lot of walking at University a couple of miles in and a couple of miles out every day, plus the walking around on campus where lectures could be a mile or so apart. One thing you learn to appreciate is a good rucksack.

IF you try an "outdoor pursuits" shop you're more likely to get one that has better support than a "fashion" backpack or bag. Also wearing it correctly, one strap over each shoulder, and having someone adjust the straps properly should help too.

Either that or intimidate/blackmail/bribe/beg/charm someone else into carryng everything for you

i used to have loads in mine and even my neck used to hurt and lets face it i am a strong bloke

have to tried swapping shoulders throughout the day and also maybe carrying with your hand and 2 handles on the way home or something as at least it won't keep puttibng pressure on one shoulder and neck all day.

Are you sure you need all those books?
When i was at school, I basically used to carry one book per subject and that was only to write things in. When it comes down to it, textbooks aren't very useful in the majority of lessons, and you can always borrow/share one if you do need it

I used to have problems with this too and we have lockers! Just remember, two straps are better than one...

Like you Linz, I used to carry heaps of books around with me for college and school. I found the best idea was a rucksack , which helped to distribute the weight.

Hope you can get this sorted out soon.

Two points:
one - If you're going to carry things around in your hands rather than on your back, carry one bag in each hand and try to get them the same weight so as to balance you. Don't carry everything in one hand, that'll make things worse.

two - Do you have friends who suffer the same way? You shouldn't have to put up with pain and discomfort in this way (apart from the whole sitting in lessons thing

). In the worst case scenario this could lead to permanent disability (I'm thinking along the lines of RSI). Perhaps one of our lawyer friends has some thoughts on this?

Just remember, two straps are better than one...

This is so true. However if your bag does only have one strao, cary it with the strap accross yourseln & not over one shoulder. It makes it a bit more difficult to take off, but is much more comfy.
