What level of French do you speak at the moment? I wouldn't underestimate how good you could get in three months actually, the key is using it constantly and in real life situations. The bit where they can put you up with a local family sounds like it would be really invaluable.

What location were you thinking of? Of the ones on that site, steering clear of Paris might be best - too big and too easy to get away without speaking French. Especially in the summer. Tours is very nice. Bourdeaux is ok, but smells of fish...

Ah no! I was going to go with Paris! But it might be a bit pricey and you're right about the getting away with not speaking French (I was there in the summer, no matter how much french you try to speak, they always reply in english! ). I don't really have much French at all, got a B at GCSE, but I do think I pick languages up fairly quickly, especially when I'm in the country (but then, doesn't everybody?). The other place I was thinking of was Nice, but I think I need a big, proper city now (I've been living in a small village, near a small town for 18 years now and I'm getting a bit sick of it!). Nice is great, but I can see it getting old fast.

Of course, it doesn't even have to be France! Too many decisions! Too much pressure! It's scary enough leaving home, but to go to a completely different country! ARRRGH! *nervous breakdown* And I've still got apply to university again Sorry...whining a bit now...

Well wouldn't go to normanadie either as 10% of the local population there is English Although it might be a good safety net

I personally don't pick up foreign languages very quickly at all (said the Dutch guy).... Always had failing grades for stuff like French and German and stuff.

There are a lot of executive language training courses around which teach you a language in like 3 - 6 weeks. What they basically do is put you in with a group of monks who teach you the language and don't let you get away with speaking anything else than that language of course up to the level to which you have been trained. And when you are done you can speak the language really well. At least to a level on which you can communicate normally
