Great tip given to me by a classmate who went to Oxford (and hence wore them way more than I ever will!): tie the thing around your knee first. It then becomes much clearer to see how it works and hence easier to tie it around your neck.
(Bow) ties that bind
Serious business this. Anyone else round these parts been faced with these horrors? My darn pride wouldn't let me wear a clip-on with some evening wear (they look naff anyway ... oi, no that doesn't make them ideal), so I went for the real McCoy and have spent the last half hour tying one with the "aid" of numerous instructions from google, finishing up with something that looks like it was tied by a team of monkeys in boxing gloves.
So please, tell me the buggers get easier!

First thing -- make sure it's long enough, if you're having trouble as it is then lengthen it.
Second thing -- don't worry about making it look neat & tight right away, get it tied first and don't worry about it looking nice. Once it's tied you can tidy it up.
Third thing -- get thinner, longer, and prefereably double-jointed fingers.

God, the things you rake up Bee.
Thanks for the advice guys. I can now tie a pretty neat bow tie: glad to have the important things for uni sorted.

I've seen enough weird books in my time as a library assistant, so glad to help with the arcana!

Although perhaps I shouldn't have, this does feel a bit like assisting the enemy, y'know...
Not at all; staying on the good side of your natural superiors is just good common sense.

I remember it taking almost an hour to do mine up before Lioness's Prom - and that was despite five years of regular practice... but then I am a sausage fingered clumsy oaf
My recommendation is to say to hell with the pride and semi-cheat.
Use a clip on for the main event, then when the evening is getting late, and people are relaxing, nip into the bathroom, switch the clipon for a real bowtie which you leave dangled round your neck untied so it looks like it was a real one.
