Remberance Sunday
A little belated, but I feel we should have a thread to mark the day.
The Parable of the Old Man and the Young, Wilfred Owen
So Abram rose, and clave the wood, and went,
And took the fire with him, and a knife.
And as they sojourned both of them together,
Isaac the first-born spake and said, My Father,
Behold the preparations, fire and iron,
But where the lamb, for this burnt-offering?

Sixth Form did 2 mins silence in Assembly last week but on the 11th we weren't allowed to stop lessons to do the silence - disgusting! I have to say I got a bit teary whilst doing it. Bought myself a poppy, and I normally buy a white poppy which represents every person who has fallen in war. On Sunday I forgot the silence, so angry!

That's well out of order they didn't hold a silence on the 11th. What's armistice day to leage tables I guess.
Been interested for a while where you get white poppies from? The only place I've found is direct from the Peace Pledge Union in boxes of 100!

Our Amnesty International school group sold them (I used to be a member).
I was really disgusted, it's only 2 minutes, and during those two minutes how much teaching would actually get done anyway?!

Probably because my schools really old fashioned, we had 2 minutes silence on the 11th, and then on the Sunday I held another 2 minutes silence.
You would've thought with some people in this country being sent to war at the moment that this year people would have marked the occasion even more. I went to Ypres last year to look at all the graves and the trenches, and that's really stuck with me to mark the occasion.

I was out in the freezings on Sunday in Dorchester doing our annual parade there (I always say I'll take a vest, but I always forget...)
There was a lot of discussion as to whether it was 1 min or 2 mins on Sunday - but it was eventually worked out that it was 2 mins on the 11th, 1 on the nearest Sunday, and always 2 at the Cenotaph in London.
I always get a white poppy and a red poppy, on the basis that I don't feel that remembering the dead and hoping there will be no more are in any way incompatible. I get mine from the local Quaker shop...

Was under the impression the white poppy commemorated the war dead AND hoped for no more war. Is this not the case?

If they have to harass people in the street -- and they bloody well shouldn't, cos forced rememberance is a contradiction in terms -- why not go after the majority who don't wear *anything* to mark the Armistice. Whatever one thinks of the white poppies, at least they're taking note of the day.
