Use Firefox as your default internet browser. It has a built in pop-up blocker and is the best browser on windows.

Now't wrong with Maff's suggestion. I'd happily agree with that.

You could download and install something like the google toolbar which is supposed to help (though I've no direct experience of it).

Before Firefox came along I used this which when you install it wraps itself around Internet Explorer and provides pop-up blocking, ad filtering and tabbed browsing (multiple pages in one window). It's good for those people who want to stick with the generic look and feel of Internet Explorer - though Firefox isn't that different and I tend to alternate between the two depending on which takes my fancy on any particular day.

from a different angle. What scanner is it and what problems did you have?

Well it was my husband who was installing the scanner and all i know is that it's a Packard Bell scanner (same make as my PC) and it just wouldn't install. When he tried to install the software it was telling him to insert the disc even when the disc was already installed. Apart from that, i'm not really sure...

But i'm getting a Windows Update to install Service Pack 2 again and i'm reluctant to incase it screws around with the scanner again...

Google toolbar does a very good job on pop ups. Better than the windows one IMO.

Did you get the Scanner and SP2 working.

if not let me know the PC model number and the Scanner model number.

I've read on the Microsoft site that they are not going to issue patches for SP1 systems soon. So you will have to install SP2 to get any new patches.

I didn't. I was told to check the packard bell website to look for SP2 conflicts with the scanner we have. Of course i just didn't have a clue and also i really haven't had the time

And this is me you're talking to (the resident "blonde" of the site).. i wouldn't have a clue where to look for model numbers...

Wierd, i use Firefox and it's never signed me out of T21... maybe T21 are trying to tell you something

The only prob Firefox has had in my case is that it seems to take ages to sign into Hotmail and keeps forgetting my password... *shrug*

Ive had not problems with Firefox, it also has the benefit of being immune to most of the adware/spyware thats out there which is primarily written for IE

Installed this end after a nasty incident with one of those things that downloads itself onto your puter, and have had no problems (and no popups!) since!

Just read in my IT weekly that there is a new Vulnerability which affects Firefox but not IE something about images coded in the URL

The XBM Image Vulnerability you mean.... which crashes the browser if high enough values are defined in the ascii file.

Not anywhere as serious as the activex risks users face with IE..... and face it how often doesn't IE just crash

My scanner is a Diamond 1200 plus scanner (packard bell)

Okay, this is another problem i'm having....

Ray was downloading Cd covers last night and followed a link for a particular cover he wanted. All of a sudden he started getting a lot of popups and clicked something called "Powerscan". Later on i started having major problems getting connected on line, i kept getting DNS errors and i also realised that i wasn't getting the dial up box to connect (I have Wanadoo Broadband)... the only way i can get on line is to go to the Control Panel Click on Network Connections and click on "connect" to get on line. How have i lost my dial up box? i've done a Norton virus scan and that came back clear... i'm sure it's something to do with whatever link Ray clicked on (i also found hard core porn links attached to my favourites list which really cheered me up...not)... can anyone help or have any ideas before i call Wanadoo's BB support line?

I suggest you get yourself some anti spy and adware tools. Good ones are Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad-aware

Both free and pretty effective (use both as they focus on different type of threats)
