Hey Persephone and congratulations on becoming an Auntie
Well the age to introduce solids is between 4-6 months as you've said, so your nephew is in the right age range to try. If he's interested in what you eat, isn't satisfied after his bottle/breast feed then that's usually an indication that he's ready to try.
Joel was about four months when he started on solids, i remember because it was about the time that he was baptised and because he was so hungry, he took to it straight away. It was fun watching his face changing and testing different flavours with him. He hated the pureed fruit though and even now won't tolerate fruit and he's 11 years old LOL. But we started him on the plain baby rice and gradually introduced different flavours... veggies, fruit, custards etc. He wasn't wild on fruit but pretty much loved everything else. Hannah was slightly older (and i think by the time she came along, the guide lines had changed from 4 months to closer to six months) and she took to it pretty well but we made the mistake of introducing her to sweet flavours first so you can imagine we had some fun introducing veggies to her successfully, but eventually we did and she loves her veggies still.
As i said, it's all down to baby and whether he's ready to try.
