OK, i was thinking today. If you wina blue peter badge can you still use it to get in places free when you're an adult? I think you should be able to.

That's why I wanted to check because I know someone who got a badge in his mid 40s. The Brass Band I used to play in featured in Blue Peter programme in the late 70's (a year or two before I joined) and all of the members, including the musical director, received a BP badge. He still has it to this day.

The only good thing about Blue Peter was the occasional totty they had on it.

Other than that, I can't believe it's still on. Time to s***can it, as someone once said...

I've got a real Blue Peter Badge somewhere.......

Thinking about it, I remember going to a Bring & Buy sell when I was a kid. Think it was something to do with Cambodia. Never got a badge though.

Kids still watch it, they still raise loads of money for the Blue Peter appeal every year. Why get rid of something that kids enjoy that has educational value as well?

One thing that BP has been really good at is evolving so that it still appeals to children of each generation. I'd never have watched it when I was younger if it had stayed exactly as it had when Peter Purves did it. In my opinion the Karon Keating and John Leslie days were the best and it when down hill from when Katy Hill joined but that probably also had something to do with turning 14 as well!

Ok I agree with it raising money and being educational that its a good thing. But do kids actually enjoy it even though they watch it? Only reason I watched it was to wait until they showed you how to make soemthnig the rest of it bored me, and I have to say, back at school I never knew anyone who loved it and really enjoyed it, everyone else used to prefer Thundercats! Which I totally agree was more interesting for a 9 year old! I also used to watch it as on ITV at that time it was blockbusters which I didn't appreciate at the time and used to sit and watch blue peter waiting for neighbours to come on. So maybe the only reasn kids watch it is to wait for neighbours or cuz theres nothing else on. I much prefered educational programmes such as 'How 2' which always taught you things in each show and was just, well really cool compared to blue peter!

It just seemed like schooling after school for middle class kids to me. I like what the show aspires to, but that in itself doesn't make it riveting for kids.

Everyone who appears on the show gets a badge, irrespective of age. I knew a girl in the local church choir a few years back who got one. But if you want to win one you've got to be under-16. And if you win one, it's a crappy little plastic circle, but people who actually appear get the cool Blue Peter shield thingie.

(Yeah, guess who did some checking when he was coming up to his 16th ... all those freebies, gone!)

I shouldn't have said this: now we're going to get Spike trying to find his way onto the show. Won't someone please think of the children!

Used to think I'd been brainwashed by a bout of uncritical childhood nostalgia, but then I caught one of those Blue Peter retrospective thingies, and yep, the show's a shadow of itself. Used to be professional reckless lunatics shinning up 100ft flagpoles and the cure to the common cold out of stickyback plastic and a squeezy bottle, but now all the excitement's off the screen with the trail of Scotch cads, cokeheads and, bizzarely, alleged sectarian proddies. (I said bizzarely.) The programme itself is terminally bland.
