£140 is a fair price for mid-range glasses. I last bought a basic pair a few years ago for around £100 and that was from a local, non-franchised, optitians.

As long as you don't opt for designer frames (which most of the time you can't see whether someone is wearing them, or not) and normal lenses (lighter lenses, scratch resitant lenses, and light sensitive will all add to the cost), you'll probably end up with a perfectly useful pair of glasses for half what your mum paid for hers.

I always go to specsavers, they've always provided me a great service and at a reasonable price. I've been lucky that i've been entitled to hep through the NHS or through work for every pair of glasses i've ever needed, for eample my last pair of designer glasses only cost me £15.

I'd suggest that you at least go for an eye test to see if you need glasses first, then discuss with them your options. If you tell them your budget then they can do their best for you. If you do need glasses and leave it for a long time you can do serious damage to your eyes and then you'll *have* to get really expensive glasses.

Same here Sydney... i always go to Specsavers... the price you're quoted there is the price for the frames and the lenses, unlike some who charge each separately. I'm not sure what the lowest priced frames are these days... maybe around £50.00-£60.00 and the ones i'm wearing now cost £99.00 and i got sunglasses free I think the cost of an eye test there is around the £17.50 mark.

There are some opticians that offer a free eye test, usually they're the smaller, less well known ones but they're just as professional as the bigger chains.

Which reminds me...my eye test is due in June....

My glasses cost about £100 but I also have daily contacts for £18 per month. I always use Specsavers too.

Have you tried online stores? Once you get a prescription you're not obliged to buy glasses from that store. The only downside I can see is that you can't try them on first.

Personally I use Dolland & Aitchison - good price, good quality, good customer service. Have also used Co-op in the past, but there don't seem to be any co-op opticians in the south.
