£140 is a fair price for mid-range glasses. I last bought a basic pair a few years ago for around £100 and that was from a local, non-franchised, optitians.
As long as you don't opt for designer frames (which most of the time you can't see whether someone is wearing them, or not) and normal lenses (lighter lenses, scratch resitant lenses, and light sensitive will all add to the cost), you'll probably end up with a perfectly useful pair of glasses for half what your mum paid for hers.
