The power of fear

London. I hate the people who did this. I travel through those places every week. They won't feel safe for a long time.

That victory is unavoidable, and it's the only one I'll give them. Whoever committed today's murders score another, greater triumph. Damage from the attacks is the prelude to the stripmining of our eroded civil liberties. Expect an army of men kicking doors down, "control orders", torture and kangaroo courts as the government exploit collective fear. The repressive laws already in place will now linger for decades to come. "They will never succeed in destroying what we hold dear in this country," Blair has just said. They succeeded long ago.

From the information released, today wasn't the work of a well resourced, global terrorist organisation. The IRA routinely did worse. There is no al-Qu'ida, but a series of fragmented, largely unconnected Islamist extremists. The power we gift them in our nightmares is more than they'd ever achieve by their own labours.

I agree that the gov. will milk this in order to further reduce civil liberties, push ID cards through and suchlike.

From the information released, today wasn't the work of a well resourced, global terrorist organisation.

You seem pretty confident about that. A co-ordinated attack
like this would have taken months of planning. It's hardly small potatoes stuff.

I'm not confident at all, I said from the information I know. It's not small potatoes, it's killed several people, and it's clearly well planned, but its scale suggests its neither as well resourced nor as fanatical as the September 11 attacks. If al-Qu'ida is the supergroup the governments of the world claim it to be, their first strike on London would be bigger than this.

I'm don't agree...you're judging scale by casualties, not how difficult it would be to pull off - it was 500mph planes and jet fuel that killed so many people on 9/11, that was what created the scale. The actual co-ordination required was probably not much higher for that than it was for this attack, or the one in Spain.
