It's a shame that given all the good that the catholic church could (and in a large number of cases does) do that the pope has to waste his time making statements about Harry Potter.
Catholic Church - back to its old tricks?
After Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone in March blasted Dan Brown's Catholic conspiracy bestseller "The Da Vinci Code" as an absurd distortion of history, saying it was full of cheap lies and Catholic bookstores should take it off their shelves, Harry Potter seems next on their list.
Although under old management the Vatican appeared to approve of the Harry Potter books, saying they helped children to understand the difference between good and evil, everything might now change.
As apparently the new CEO of the Catholic Church, Pope Benedict XVI, believes the Harry Potter books subtly seduce young readers and "distort Christianity in the soul" before it can develop properly. (Or at least according to comments attributed to him by a German writer)

Well that the book isn't the full truth and nothing but the truth doesn't make it any less interesting to read The problem I have with it is the "and Catholic bookstores should take it off their shelves" part. Because if the criteria for not stocking a book are "absurd distortion of history and full of cheap lies" I know some other books that the Catholic bookstores should take off their shelves which I'm pretty much sure every one of them stocks and they certainly won't take of their shelves.

Agreed about that not being sufficient grounds for destocking a book but I have to say, I found Da Vinci Code to be utterly predictable, derivative trash, like the author had read Holy Blood And Holy Grail and combined it with a Scooby Doo script!
The subject of Harry Potter, Da Vinci Code and the Vatican came up on a friend's LiveJournal. Our conclusion is that DVC's sole redeeming feature is that it's got right up the nose of the ultra conservatives at the Vatican. And possibly that the paperback edition is probably sufficiently soft, strong and absorbent for use in dire emergencies...
